"Five years ago we made models predicting how much ice would melt and when," said Mr Vallio. "Five years later we are already at the levels predicted for 2040, in a year's time we'll be at 2050."

This dramatic warming is being felt across the Arctic region. In Alaska, earthquakes are rocking the seabed as tectonic plates – subdued for centuries by the weight of the glaciers on top of them – are now moving against each other again."

It is an unusual place for quakes.

Hannah, I found this article very interesting. So just out of curiosity I checked out USGS seismic monitor site. Voila!....multiple tremors recorded near the Magnetic north pole within the past week. Read the legend in the top left. These were huge readings and many of them.
I saved the image for further reference, because they change to a purple dot after two weeks.

How deep is the deepest part of the Arctic Ocean?
What affect does water pressure at 6.2 miles down have on a nuclear bomb?

Remember Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench (6.8 mi) is the deepest part of all oceans. Therefore, do we have something equivalent to this off Canada's shore? Is our government trying to breech the north polar opening? Polar satellite pictures may prove interesting. Does anyone have some to share? How about a link?

The idea of nukes on the San Andreas is a fantasy straight out of a bad 007 movie. Pumping salt water into the fault is much simpler, cheaper, and just as effective. Colorado School of Mines was doing that and causing local quakes back in the mid-80s.

i didn't hear of any reports on these. many members are hams and i don't think collectively they cold reign silence on the matter.

Maybe global warming and the melting of north polar ice needed a little encouragement so draconian measures could be pushed through. Maybe human hydrocarbon emissions had tapered off too much so it was time to release some fossil methane so readings could stay on track. Gotta look at all the possibilities ;-)
