The Nation: Maybe Nader was Right. Return of the Wall St. Hustlers

By Robert Scheer | November 26, 2008
The Nation

Maybe Ralph Nader was right in predicting that the same Wall Street hustlers would have a lock on our government no matter which major party won the election. I hate to admit it, since it wasn't that long ago that I heatedly challenged Nader in a debate on this very point.

But how else is one to respond to Barack Obama's picking the very folks who helped get us into this financial mess to now lead us out of it? Watching the president-elect's Monday introduction of his economic team, my brother-in-law Pete said, "You can see the feathers coming out of their mouths" as the foxes were once again put in charge of the henhouse. He didn't have time to expound on his point, having to get ready to go sort mail in his job at the post office, but he showed me a statement from Citigroup showing that the interest rate on Pete the Postal Worker's credit card was 28.9 percent, an amount that all major religions would justly condemn as usurious.

Moments earlier, Obama had put his seal of approval on the Citigroup bailout, which his new economic team, led by proteges of Citigroup Executive Committee Chairman Robert Rubin, enthusiastically endorsed. A bailout that brings to $45 billion the taxpayer money thrown at Citigroup and the guarantee of $306 billion for the bank's "toxic securities" that would have been illegal if not for changes in the law that Citigroup secured with the decisive help of Rubin and Lawrence Summers, the man who replaced him as Treasury secretary in the Clinton administration.

Constituent

I'm one of Nader's constituents so to speak. I voted for him this election cycle. I'm still perplexed why the American people haven't figured out the two party duopoly yet. It is so obvious when you do some critical thinking of the blowhard republicrats. If you read the 251 page bailout bill then the crap written by The Nation isn't so surprising. The writing literally was on the wall in this bill. The bill gave dictatorial powers to the Treasury Secretary. No offense but why do Daily Paulers still read crap from publications like The Nation? Why on gods name do any Daily Paulers still watch MSNBC? Most magazines, newspapers, TV news, etc are controlled media. Most of it is garbage. If they don't flat out lie then they like to "spin" there stories. Most of the time they don't even report real issues. Where did I hear that the bailout bill was unconstitutional from any of these blowhards? Where did I hear that taking over private corporations by the government is communism/nationalism/fascism? Where did I hear that giving monetary assistance to people via bailing out corporations is socialism? If anybody could point to some main stream media stories that covered my afore mentioned questions I would appreciate it. Quite frankly I rarely watch, read, and listen to any main stream media any more. I'm not out to offend any body here that still gravitates to main stream media, but I for one am tired of the lies, deceit, spin, cover up, etc that the main stream media performs.

One last question how come the media isn't in an uproar after the American people were lied to about the foreclosed mortgages being bought up by the bailout bill. Oh wait the American people didn't read the bill therefore they just assumed what magazines, newspapers, and TV were telling them was truth.

I have great respect for

I have great respect for Ralph Nader and his stand-up principles. When men such as Ron Paul and Ralph Nader, champions of the American cause, pass on ( God forbid, not for a long while) who is out there to pick up the torch, be credible, lead with the unwavering commitment that these two gentlemen have shown. So I really think that it's not the niggling differences in policy that set leaders apart, it is their 'honorability' their 'ethicalness' their devotion to 'honesty' and serving others that is lacking in the 'puppetry' that is currently elected with few exceptions.

well said

we need more generals in this revolution more Ralph's and Ron's...

Former Regulator: Clear Fraud in Financial Crisis -- Why Isn't Anyone in Jail?

Posted Nov 21, 2008 12:47pm EST by Aaron Task in Finance.Yahoo Newsmakers, Banking

In the aftermath of the corporate scandals earlier this decade, investor confidence was (partially) restored by a parade of "perp walks" of fallen chieftains like Ken Lay, Bernie Ebbers, and Dennis Kozlowski.
But nearly two years into the bursting of booms in housing and mortgage securities, scant few related arrests have been made — and most of those have been focused on individual mortgage brokers vs. major industry leaders.

"There is no poster child [for the housing scandal] because you need to investigate, and you need to bring cases and we haven't done either against the major players," says William Black, Associate Professor of Economics and Law at the University of Missouri — Kansas City and a former federal regulator.

Black, who was counsel to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board during the S&L Crisis and blew the whistle on the "Keating Five" in 1989, says investigations have shown fraud incidence of 50% at (once) major subprime lenders like IndyMac and Countrywide.

But even though the FBI warned of an "epidemic" of mortgage fraud in 2004, they subsequently made a "strategic alliance" with the Mortgage Bankers Association, which serves the major industry players.
In this case, the foxes truly were guarding the hen house.
Black notes it was only this year that the total number of FBI agents devoted to mortgage-fraud investigations rose to more than 200. By comparison, during the S&L and Enron investigations in the 1980s and '90s, respectively, multiple task forces totaling hundreds of agents were employed.

"The DOJ has refused to emulate its successes in the S&L debacle, and even dealing with Enron, by creating a large task force that would take on the major fraud participants," Black said. "In this context, that would mean creating a large task force to investigate major, nonprime lenders."

....But, of course, the mortgage debacle and news hyped superficial bailouts are a feint...petty crime and run-of-the-mill fraud. Here is the real
ongoing criminal enterprise( and so few are onto them yet):

All countries are run by

All countries are run by "special interests". Here, sometimes those special interests are one of ours. Such is life. This is why the biggest, loudest, squeakiest wheels always come out on top. Expressions of disappointment are understandable, but reality must ultimately be faced.

Truther?
No, sir!

The ones that most of the sheep will understand are still ...

coming.

Taxes will not change.

They will be poorer in 4 years.

We will still be at war.

Only when Keith Olbermann starts to do the same thing to Obama that he has been doing to the other side, will people begin to listen. I hate to admit it, but this single person can create a r3volution.

WAHOR!!
http://www.dailypaul.com/...

Who are you taling about - Olbermann?

Olbermann could start a revolution? This man is a tool of the elites. He is not going to say anything that could actually hurt Obama. We need to think realistically here.

There was a Saturday Night Live spoof of Olbermann done by Ben Affleck that was spot on in depicting what a doofus blowhard windbag he is.

I have a feeling you are probably right ...

But he showed a lot of promise outside the election cycle.

WAHOR!!
http://www.dailypaul.com/...

you are right

when Olbermann starts to trash Obama sheep will wake up....but perhaps earlier "a new war" will make that occur.

What does this have to do with President Elect Obama?? Don't bother to answer that question. You'll be yelling about Ayres the rest of your life even after he's no longer a topic of conversation. Get a life.

i am just at a loss for words.

what a gem

What a terrific find!!!
I am a huge Nader fan and a few of the 700000 votes he got came from my hard work converted by my personal campaign for him.

Thank you Michael for this thread.
P.S. we need good people to run for Congress in 2010
therefore my question would you consider running?

I'm surprised

you would challenge him on that issue.
