Everybody Panic!! (ya know; "if")

Gee, some scary headlines in this morning's news:

US to face biological attack by 2013! (yes, the bang is included in the headline)

Panel: Bio attack likely in next 5 years

'Germ attack on US before 2013'

The headlines and body of the articles want to ensure that you know that such a phenomenon is virtually inevitable, and soon.

Ooooh, wait; what's this tiny line tucked in at the end of one of the articles?

The report warned that, still it is not yet capable of building such a weapon and has yet to obtain one. But things could be changed if a nuclear weapons engineer or scientist were recruited to al-Qaida’s cause.

Did you catch that? "Not yet" capable; "yet to obtain" such a weapon; and, "IF" such-and-such, then surely death and destruction would occur. But the headlines and stories leading in the news are all about how this threat is something we can -- and should -- expect.

Hm. I have yet to obtain a unicorn's sharp, twisted horn, but if I had one, then I could very likely spear you to death. So you'd better be in fearsome panic, buddy!

This is not to say that a bio attack is impossible; however, I do find it interesting that the panic button is being pressed all over the news, based upon an if-statement.

On a completely unrelated side note: I long ago learned that if, in order to force my kids to bend to my will, I dangle too many threats over them (e.g., loss of computer privileges, play dates, etc.), they soon ignore the threats entirely, as they become nothing more than a stream of white noise to my kids' ears.

Everyone talks about "creating a panic" but I am not sure exactly what that means. Instructions please? I would hate to be left out of the big panic for lack knowing how.

First, the amount of people with the working knowledge of how to construct a nuke even with a critical mass of fissile material is limited to a very VERY small group of people.
