** Who Else Is Feeding Birds This Winter? **
In the spirit of the season let's show kindness to birds.
It is a long winter time ahead for them.
Many might not be here with us by spring time.
Today I started a new habit.
Instead of buying beer I decided to buy a 6 pack of muffins (blueberry) and fed about 50 pigeons with them.
You should see how fast a bird can eat and the smiles on peoples faces priceless which lead to conversations that went from hungry Iraqis to Obama being a warmongering traitor and Ron Paul a true American hero.

Quail, tons of them
WE had about 90 in the backyard in Christmas day.
biggest group so far. Fat ones..Right now they are like pets.
I feed them on the ground, love to see them scratching around, like little chickens. Little greedy chickens..
will work for chicken scratch
The local weather apparently does not believe in global warming, and I have been out shoveling snow every few hours for 2 days, trying to keep one tiny swath to the truck in case I need to get out, another to where my husband parks. In the past, I have purchased special bird food, this year they get bread crumbs and occasionally, I toss some of the chicken's scratch along the sidewalk. I do hope the birds enjoy it, but it is partly for traction, too. This evening, I was visited by dozens of Oregon Juncos and California Quail (damn transplants, ruining the state!) There were so many that even their tiny little bird bodies were enough to melt off the last layer that you can't quite scrape and it turns slicker than snot. I had to get the top 5 or 6 inches, but by golly those birds earned their scratch!
I Feed The Birds And The Deer
I've been doing it for two years now.
And the squirrels.
Quick story.....last winter was real bad here...I fed deer all winter....100 lbs every other day at my house. This summer I planted an awesome garden, (at my house). Not one deer touched my garden until the first week of October when I told them they could go get what's left...and they did......deer love chard. I really believe there is a respect in the animal kingdom.

Did again this AM
It is cold in Montana these days.
Squirrel proof bird feeder
This was recommended by someone on Pasty.com (a web site for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, altho it may sound like something else!) - supposed to be an excellent squirrel proof feeder. And it's Made in America! I ordered one today. http://www.rollerfeeder.c...
Why not get them their very own feeder?!!
So they can be distracted from the the birds feeder? I know - they think EVERY feeder was put out for them!
Try as you might, the little comedians will love you for it and it will provide you with hours of entertainment - no charge!
We used to have pet squirrels many years ago...Nip and Tuck were their names....so I have a bit of a soft spot for them. They would bury the carrot pieces in the neck of my father's shirt that he was wearing, climb up his leg INSIDE the pant leg, sleep in my mother's pockets while she was cooking and ride the handlebars of our bicycles with us. They would jump from head to head and one day my mother noticed a good silk scarf missing...months later she saw it lining the nest of one of our squirrels in a tree on a neighbors property!
so cute
What an amazing story.
I am thinking of writing a book for children about this.

I already feed the squirrels -
they get their food from my other "squirrel proof" feeders!
I'm feeding them but...
I'm feeding the birds but I am still buying beer.
Everything is an excuse to drink beer. The economy is a definite excuse to drink beer. So is bird feeding.
LOL same here!
today I bought some German US and beer from Moldovia(never tried it before)
there might not be a tomorrow(nuclear war cancer...run over by a car...)
a lot of times I feel like a bird and I was born in a country that has eagle as national symbol(Poland) and you guys have the same bird...but actually Poland puts its bird on its flag!!!

Sweet
I've got a 6-month supply, drinking 1/day, my rationing/survivalist tendencies of late.
I make home made wine too
organic from fruits

I cleaned my kitchen.
Had to stop and have a beer.
Watering the lawn?
Have a beer.
I'm a champagne girl but... hanging out in the garage with a flute of bubbly just isn't right.
It's OK
for girls to drink bubbly in the garage. Just like it's OK for girls to vacuum in high heels and pearls.
Fosters I guess
I almost ended up in Perth Australia instead of Canada when at the tender age of 18.

I've never seen an Australian drink Fosters.
They might do it while traveling overseas for nostalgia purposes, but they don't drink it at home.
Perth is a beautiful (but quiet) city. I lived there for two years. It's the most isolated capital city in the world. You don't just decide to jump in the car and go somewhere -- you've got to fly to get anywhere.
I was dreaming of digging for opals
and loved AC/DC.....18 years old.........my parents joined me in Italy and said it would be too hot for them so I switched to Canada.........often wonder what/how it would be if I stayed with my dreams of living in beautiful Australia.
and there was another city I loved Brisbane on the east coast.

I'm glad you were able to talk to the birds about Ron Paul but most of them are not registered to vote.
Demosthenes practiced speaking

Me, after this post.
Your posts and comments are continually inspiring and intelligent, legalizeliberty. Thanks for posting this. I will be going to the park this week for bird feeding and watching.
p.s. Your screen name makes me want to laugh/cry.
sweet of you
another smile some good soul puts on my face this day.
a lot of us live stressful lives and this activity is not only good for the mind and soul but also for the body we need walking instead of just driving cars btw I never owned a car...
walk in a park feeding/watching animals returns us to our childhood and some may have thoughts of being a two year old trying to catch a bird while walking barefoot on grass.......oh the feeling of freedom....
I drink this beer to you!

Yes,
I enjoy watching them, but I think I need a better feeder. They sling the seed everywhere, wasteful creatures ;p
that's the techique they use to help plant trees
I travel all over mountains in western Canada quite often and I am always amazed to see trees taking root in all kinds of unlikely places steep ravines rock formations etc...its the work of those messy birds dropping seeds!

That felt good to do.
Thanks for the reminder.
good job Steve
you make my day.
I did the same today with the addition of sunflower seeds and big pretzels that I had to grind into tiny pieces...and I fed about 100 birds in three different places.
This is very calming its kind of like meditation/prayer...

Peace.
This is also very calming for me.
I've got a great aquarium, too.
It's great to just watch them swim.
Little things like this are so important for day-to-day living, especially these days.
absolutely
daily there is so much troubling stuff Mumbai bailouts...all kinds of upseting news so to have a healthy balance in ones life we need positive things that bring with it good vibrations.

You're KILLING the birds!
By feeding them processed, empty calories you are depriving them of natural, wholesome foods which they require. Their little tummies can hold only so much and by filling them with junk they have no room for the good stuff and they will actually die! And by the way, it wouldn't hurt for you to also eat some wholesome food! LOL
I have heard that also.
Especially in cold climates..they need the fats and energy for warmth.
you give a bad name to Canadian muffins
I am getting them from an organic speciality store.
I eat mostly raw veggie&fruit diet
eggs from a small farm and drink raw milk...juice I get from grapefruits and oranges make my own wine from fruits too and eat Italian grapes daily.
German organic beer Holsten tops the list of my fluid intake LOL

Thanks for starting this -
It's nice to know so many others on DP are into feeding birds, gardening, etc. I feel I have more in common with everyone here than I do with people/friends I see every day. I'm really into nature, gardening, self-sufficiency, etc. and sometimes feel I don't fit in anywhere but here on DP!
:-)
I feel the same way. So much so that when coming across a certain passage from The Fountainhead, I had to literally stop reading, get online, and send the passage to a fellow RP supporter because I knew only one of us would understand the significance of it.
Kay
Many times I feel the same way my friend. If I couldn't come back here every now and again...I WOULD go Beserk!...lol
Me too
Daily Paul is having someone to talk to . . . even if it is mostly reading.
:-)
just one day without being on DP
and it feels like being away from home.

I believe ...
I believe there are some bushes you can plant that grow berries in the winter. You can grow bushes that fruit in different seasons. The chickens and birds can forage themselves to supplement their diet. I don't remember the names though. I read it in one of my permaculture books.
So I'm out of a job but in our house....
we still get...
25 pound bags of sunflower seed probably 4-5 times in the season
10 pound bags of mixed seed probably 4-5 times in the season
2-3 cases of 12 pack suet for the season
bread crumbs from assorted sour dough and multi grain breads
sometimes a 20 pound seed block at least once in the season
And then the bears wake up in the spring, so the whole shebang ends for the season and starts all over again next November!
I'm gonna feed the birds so
I'm gonna feed the birds so I can capture 'em and eat 'em when the food shortages come...lol
It takes four and twenty birds
to make a pie. That's a lot of plucking.
and a bump
for an astonishing enlightening thread
Thank you for your heart warming comment
feels good to be part of the force of Love&Light
btw did you receive my picture I emailed you after you send me yours?

★★★thank you RON PAUL★★★
Is that a joke?

Right on!
Two years ago I was going to apply for one of those signs to put in our yard, but I forgot who to apply to.
I feed
the desert birds, jack-rabbits, coyotes in the desert across the street all the time. I take the expired food & whatever leftovers don't get eaten on time & hike them into the desert. I can hear the coyotes yip at night when their eating the scraps. I put the older veggies outside of the rabbit holes & scatter the old bread around. The coyotes love old sandwiches or pizza. They especially get lots of goodies around the holidays when some leftovers go bad before they get eaten. I love hearing them howl to each other late at night.
Coyote howling
sounds like Chinese opera with everyone singing at once.
