There is not much that is "free" besides the air we breathe and they're going to tax that. Everyone pays for socialism eventually—in this case, under Big Brother's model, it would ultimately cost the bastion of free speech that is facilitated by the internet.

My father is a big tech-junkie. He has been reading up about Microsoft's Cloud Computing.
Basically, they want to change the future of computers. Instead of all your data being stored on your hard drive along with you programs and such, computers of the future will all be web-based.
What does this mean for you?
It means absolutely no privacy. All your data will be stored on a server somewhere. Your computer will cease to be what it is now and will only act in the capacity of a receiver. Like a TV, it will have nothing on it and will rely on a signal to for it to operate. This means greater control by the power elite, because if there is something in your server account that big brother does not like, it will simply disappear. All work performed on your PC will be saved to a server some place only God knows where.
I repeat, if Cloud Computing is allowed to come into being, modern computers will be reduced to a screen and keyboard that is reliant on a wireless signal to operate. Nothing will be yours and you will be at the mercy Microsoft's web-based operating system.
This is why they want to give us "free" wireless internet, to get everyone used to having online capability. It might start out kinda nice, but when the new MS operating system rolls out... just watch out.
Not to scare anyone, because I do have a solution.
My dad recently ditched Microsoft XP and installed the newest Linux operating system, Ubuntu.
HE CAN'T STOP RAVING ABOUT IT!
He says it works better than MS and can run anything XP can. All you have to do is install the WINE program and nearly every windows based program will work on your new Linux, Ubuntu PC.
He has been into computing and electronics since way before I was born so I do believe he knows what he is talking about.
DITCH MICROSOFT! Get Linux and kill the beast.

I feel like if I tried to disengage from Windows I'd permanently ruin my computer. I'm not very tech savvy.
But it sure sounds intriguing.

Personally, though, ever since Mac OS X came out in 2001, I started phasing out my Linux machines (I used to run Linux on some older Macs), especially since many Linux software packages can be built for OS X to run either as native apps or under the X11 windowing system.
I only use Windows when absolutely necessary (for some oddball proprietary program that a client may use, for example, and with which I may need to assist).
it'll be monitored, controlled and censored anyway. It already is .... censored. I've heard of blogs putting out revealing information ... then threatened to force them to remove it. Maybe it'll just be censored more.
As compared to others, yes it is already censored, and that Youtube mess "this video not available in your area", yes it is already censored & monitored. They just want to do more and feel better about doing it.
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.
It looks bad, it smells bad
It looks bad, it smells bad and it tastes bad so... IT'S DEFINITELY BAD!!! Yeah, no way they're going to sugar-coat what I knew!
"free"....that's when it gets really expensive....as well as
restrictive.

They're going to tax the air?
We'll all have to get air meters?

Cloud Computing will take personal computers away from us?
No hard drive would mean no more personal programs or private data storage?
I Wish I Knew More About This
I feel like if I tried to disengage from Windows I'd permanently ruin my computer. I'm not very tech savvy.
But it sure sounds intriguing.

Son is running Gentoo very easily on his computers
MAC and Linux only for him - although he repairs PCs all the time!
Only if you use a command line interface instead of a decent
graphical interface.
For Linux, Gnome and KDE are popular GUIs. Take a look at them:

A free internet
will equal a controlled/censored internet. Be careful what you wish for.
