PepsiCo Ready to Launch Stevia Sweetened Diet Sodas

"PepsiCo said it's ready to rock with stevia-sweetened soft drinks as soon as the FDA ends its decades-long ban on stevia in foods and beverages. It joins Coca-Cola and Cargill in ramping up plans for stevia-related products in anticipation of FDA GRAS approval.
The FDA has kept stevia illegal for well over a decade, most likely to protect the profits of aspartame, a chemical sweetener that failed safety testing and was pushed through the FDA approval process by Donald Rumsfeld.
Stevia is a safe, natural sweetener with zero calories, making it a strong competitor with aspartame, Sucralose and other chemical sweeteners. That's why the FDA kept it out of the food supply for so long, even going so far as to order the destruction of recipe books that offered stevia recipes."

Here is some background on the role Don Rumsfeld played to get aspartame approved.

Note: Anyone over the age of 30 might remember the marketing campaign that ensued after aspartame's FDA approval. Remember the Nutrasweet pellets they sent to everyone's home?

celestial seasonings
last year I started drinking celestial seasonings "zingers to go" herbal tea. they came in little one serving packets that you pour into a 16 oz bottle of water. they were sweetened with stevia and were really good. I can't find them anywhere now. when I noticed they were getting harder to find, I bought all that my local Meijer had on the shelf (about 12 boxes) and I haven't seen them on the shelves since.
If the FDA had banned stevia for use in food and beverages for over a decade, then how were these zingers allowed to be produced?
Stevia is good stuff
I bought some after someone posted about it. After a few cups of coffee with it you get used to the taste and it's much better than equal, sweet-n-low or splenda/ Pretty pricey though.
We use it in the crystalized form. It takes a bit to get used to
but what the heck.

Stevia is good stuff
Just a tiny little bit goes a long way to naturally sweeten. However, its taste is not quite like sugar's -- stevia has kind of an almost licorice-y flavor to it, and it doesn't go well in everything (it does *not* go in my coffee, for example). But it's good for a lot of sweetening purposes.
My guess is that Pepsi will bind it to melamine so that they can claim a higher protein content in their soft drinks. Ha! (Oooh, maybe I shouldn't "ha" at that possibility...)
This is very good news
Japan has been using Stevia in soft drinks and a lot of other foods. No one has died, hmmm. How come something that is made in nature is considered unsafe but some chemical combination made in a lab isn't?

Stevia
Stevia is also a common ingredient that pharmacies use to compound multiple medications together to make it palatable.
For The Constitution!
I use stevia as a sweetener
in my coffee, but I definitely don't trust the Pepsi Co not to alter it in some way.
Is it GMO like Aspartame?
Yummy Frankenfood.
