What the hell is a "Civil Liberty"

It sounds like rights handed down from the Government. I don't want "civil liberties" I want god-given rights. Maybe I'm all wrong about this, but it seems to fall into that "democracy" NLP category that I can't stand.

Natural rights

are those endowed by our creator. Travel, speech, life and liberty are natural to you very existence. Civil rights depend upon the existence of government. The right to vote, redress of grievances, jury trial are civil rights. The Plumber

The difference, as I see it:

Civil Liberty is a weaker but more expansive term than Civil Right. A Civil Right is a pre-existing condition of personhood as applied to life in a civil society. A Civil Liberty includes these rights as well as other privileges enjoyed in a civil society. So if there was some freedom we have that is not a Civil Right, it could still be a Civil Liberty.

As for why Dr. Paul focuses on the word "liberty" rather than "right" or "freedom," I believe it is because it is not as tainted by doublespeak as either of those terms. Ex, "Right to healthcare," "Operation Iraqi Freedom."

I prefer inalienable rights given by God Himself..

God's gifts and his calling are irrevocable- Romans 11:29

Civil Liberty Civil Rights =

Civil Liberty
Civil Rights = same thing

Civil as in a citizen or citizens, civilians.

"The spirit of the times may alter, will alter. Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless.
A single zealot may commence persecutor, and better men be his victims. It can never be too often repeated that the time for fixing every essential right on a legal basis is while our rulers are honest and ourselves united. From the conclusion of [their] war [for independence, a nation begins] going down hill. It will not then be necessary to resort every moment to the people for support.
They will be forgotten, therefore, and their rights disregarded. They will forget themselves but in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights.
The shackles, therefore, which shall not be knocked off at the conclusion of [that] war will remain on [them] long, will be made heavier and heavier, till [their] rights shall revive or expire in a convulsion." --Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Virginia Q.XVII, 1782

Because it's easier to say

Because it's easier to say "civil liberties" in a sentence than it is to say "my gol-dang Gawd-given rights, by cracky!"

I see where you are coming from

I like to think of a civil liberty using the definition of civil in the sense of private as opposed to the state. They are mine and your natural God given private liberties that are not to be infringed upon by anyone especially the state.

I don't think of my liberty being given to me by anyone except my creator and while I may not like to have a modifier added to the word liberty, civil meaning private isn't that bad.

I can't speak for others interpretations of the phrase. But, just judging from what I have heard Dr. Paul say and what I have read, I think that this probably falls in line with his views on the phrase civil liberties as well.

Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.

Well, I hope that's how it's generally interpreted

The phrase is going nowhere, so I'm going to have the same philosophy you do. Thanks.

Sadly I don't think that is how the general population

interprets it. Remember we're talking about the ones that grew up in government schools being taught what to think instead of how to think.

But, as for me I am a minority:

Isn't liberty

what sailors get when they are allowed to get off the ship.I want to get off the ship whithout asking permission so to speak!

That's what I'm saying.

Liberties are not rights. I have rights, not Liberties

I never did like that word.

I was a little disturbed when Ron
Paul named the group Campaign For Liberty.
