Yes, on "Spare the air days", anyone burning wood in the fireplace could be fined. If any is interested here is the phone number we have to call before we can use our fireplace. With the nights getting down in the 40's now it really sucks when we can't use the fireplace.

it is true! We are here in San Joaquin County, but we burn when we damn well please. Haven't heard anything about anyone getting busted for keeping warm.

But I was mostly raised in the Black Hills (South Dakota side). I still lived with Dad & Mom when they moved to the tri-state area (South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa.

I still can’t figure out why anyone would move to Sioux City, Iowa on purpose.

At least one can carry a gun, theoretically without a hassle. This old guy in my neighborhood told me that he had to pull his gun on a police officer who was conducting an unlawful vehicle search. The old dude could have been yarning me a tale. Almost every policeman I’ve ever met around here has been very friendly and respectful, although I've had run-ins. Some cops [and many bureaucrats!!!] are just irritating morons who act like life by the book often means more than the real-life order of things.

In the South Bay Area, today was a "spare-the-air" day. I heard it on the radio. If the police see smoke, they can give you a ticket. So said the radio. One is obligated to know when they declare a spare-the-air. Of course, there is a web site. "Updated daily before noon." http://www.baaqmd.gov/

Yes, this has been true in Sacramento County for the past year or so. But pretty much nobody pays much attention to it when it comes to wood burning stoves. I think those getting ticketed are probably in a dispute with a neighbor about something else and their neighbor "turns them in" for smoke coming from their fireplace on a no-burn day. Pretty much everyone I know ignores it -- it's been quite cold here (to us California wimps).

L.A.'s beaches are also devoid of fire pits for grilling, campfires, just chilling etc. They do have pits in San Diego and you can build fires at Grover Beach (wonderful place to camp right on the beach for about $7 a night).

The co-worker is correct. This is also true for outdoor fires, like if you have a fire pit in your backyard. However, there actually is a way around this. The law doesn't apply to fires used for cooking. So, if you want to light a fire on a "no burn" day, just stick a marshmallow on a stick and go for it :).
