Open Letter to CNN and Glenn Beck: Ron Paul Supporters are Not Terrorists
Dear Sirs,
CNN and Glenn Beck recently aired an inflammatory and misleading piece comparing Ron Paul supporters to terrorists. Mr. Beck’s irresponsible association has already led to impassioned responses from the large, peaceful and growing Ron Paul community, including a call to boycott CNN’s sponsors, and an eloquent response from a former US Marine.
I was heartened by the Marine’s response. I fully support and encourage the boycott efforts. With this letter, I am also urging everyone within the Ron Paul community to write directly to CNN, requesting that your network and Glenn Beck issue a retraction, clarification and an apologyto Ron Paul and the peaceful Ron Paul community for your wrongful and damaging characterization.
On November 5th, nearly 40,000 hard working Americans donated an average of $98 to Ron Paul’s campaign for president, resulting in one of the biggest one-day online political fundraising events ever. We did it because we are tired of mainstream networks such as yours ignoring us. We did it with the intention of making a news splash so large that you could no longer pretend we do not exist. Our efforts succeeded beyond our wildest expectations, but Mr. Beck’s recent piece has revealed your true colors.
You did something shameful. You chose to portray 40,000 upstanding Americans as terrorists. I find it tragically ironic that Glenn Beck chose a segment called, “A Nation Divided” to compare the peaceful actions of fellow American citizens to terrorists. Mr. Beck’s actions only contribute to the division in this country. Calling this large group of peaceful Americans terrorists is an absolute disgrace, especially in a post-911 America when the Military Commissions Act allows the president, at his sole discretion, to name any American an “enemy combatant.” Your network and Glenn Beck may think it is funny to play fast and loose with this kind of language, but I take this very, very seriously. Nothing could be more divisive than to call fellow law-abiding Americans “terrorists.” Is this how far your network has sunk in its desperate grab for ratings? Shame on you. Shame on you and your editors, for selling out the foundations of our country so readily and so cheaply.
In his piece Mr. Beck erroneously stated that Dr. Paul’s November 5th fundraising was done “to commemorate Guy Fawkes.” What is your source for this statement? This statement is factually incorrect, and I hereby request that you produce your source, or retract it. With this single incorrect fact, Beck goes on to spin an entire piece that only amplifies and distorts his disinformation. Later in the piece, CNN’s guest, David Horowitz, speaking of Ron Paul, says: “I think it is very significant that he chose Guy Fawkes as an image.” This so clearly misinformed that it would be laughable if not for its seriousness. Is it your network's standing policy to allow such woefully misinformed guests on all of your “news” shows? How can you expect informed citizens to believe any of your future program guests if you allow such egregious errors go unchecked and uncorrected? Ron Paul and his official campaign had nothing to do with the organization of this day, so it is impossible that Ron Paul was the one to “choose Guy Fawkes as an image.” Please do not assume that all Americans are complete idiots, nor that we will stand by passively as you broadcast such lies.
Your poorly researched, factually incorrect, sensationalist opinion is exactly what is dividing America and driving citizens from networks such as yours to the unimpeachable honesty and integrity exemplified by Dr. Ron Paul and his peaceful campaign for president. I hereby request that you issue a retraction, clarification and apology to Dr. Paul and his grassroots supporters. Without it, your network will continue its accelerating slide towards the realm of complete irrelevance in the minds of informed Americans.
Sincerely,
Michael Nystrom

Readers, please contact CNN directly using this form for the Glenn Beck show. Be polite, but firmly ask for an apology, clarification and a retraction. This is too serious to let stand. I will have more on why this is so serious in the next few days. Thank you all for your support.

Campaign's response
You can listen to Jesse Benton, the campaign's communications director, respond to Glenn Beck's inflammatory comments here:
http://www.infowars.com/
Click on the red banner called "Listen Now: Infowars Main Stream"
The stream featuring Jesse Benton will play every two hours at
6 pm ET, 8 pm ET, 10 pm ET, etc.
Jesse places most of the blame for the inflammatory comments on David Horowitz, Beck's guest on the show. Jesse also explains that the campaign is still trying to get Ron Paul on Beck's show.
Where in that whole segment did you hear Ron Paul or Supporters
Where in that whole segment did you hear Ron Paul or Supporters being called terrorist.
I support Ron Paul very much, but this is crazy. He was showing that some can and might take it to extreme.
hink about it… if you do a funding campaign in basic ideal support for a guy willing to blow away some one based on his beliefs and religion which is fascist, Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, racial, religious attributes. By using that as a reason for funding equals supporting the ideas of the person, now for one Glenn Beck did not say that Ron Paul wanted that and that that was his campaign, but that he may want to clarify some guide lines of what he really means because revolution is a strong word, in fact very strong, even the bible tells about even if your government is doing you wrong that rebelling will only be bad for you. Now I’m not saying we should shut up and get raped, but should not support the idea of blowing the government up because they’re not following our voice. If you open your ears and listen you will not hear him trying to tie the Ron Paul campaign into terrorism and did not call the supporters terrorist, that you’re self is bs’ing he’s just trying to show words are powerful and that the wrong people may take it too seriously…
Doing a fundrasising campaign using Guy Fawkes is like saying we need money to do what he did…. get the point… its not the idea that some one is going to do it again but that some one already tryed and now your pulling money together using him as a support or reason for rasing money… Like i said i’m for Ron Paul and i dont believe and i’m sure Glenn Beck doesnt’ beleive that Ron Paul’s campaign is about it or has anything to do with it, he just needs to not support the ideas like those. Words are very powerful, and just because it’s catchy doesnt mean, “hey guys lets use it since its catchy and was in a movie” Oh and how is the media making patriots look like terrorists? atleast Glenn Bck isn’t he said that it could basiclly spin out of control.
i just don’t see where you think he calls ron paul supporters terrorist… he even says at the end on his poll that he fears some may take the word revolution too seriously even after Guy Fawkes Fund Raiser… You guys are just taking it way out of context and it makes me think you havent even watched the video because if you did than you would see i’m very much swo right… but thank you guys for your time and if you have any thing to add please do so…
Money Bomb - Trade Embargo or New Trade?
Unable to make an edit on previous post.
We not only cancel on a single day against those who don't pull sponsorship but we could open acct. with those who do cancel.
We only need to set a date together and let the company know that their trade relations with Ron Paul supports is dependent on how they respond.
Getting CNN it respond is dependent on getting their sponsors attention. For that we need to communicate a single day when they will gain or lose business.
Tell any saleman with a quota to fill that he can close a deal if their company repsonds in some way and everyone in that company will hear it. The chorus will be louder then our emails and phone calls.
Moneybomb the Sponsors Day
What we need is an Sponsor deadline day, a different type of money bomb. Unless the sponsor make a public statement against Glenn Beck or make a statment that will remove sponsorship from CNN then we drop the bomb on them.
I work in one of the companies posted in the CNN supportor list. We have been getting tons of emails and phone calls. Keep it up people in the company are hearing about Ron Paul for the first time.
The company (sponsor) like most I am sure does not take the idea of putting pressure on CNN seriously unless they feel that they will truely lose business. Thus far there have been some acct lost and many threat of not doing business.
I contact my Farmers Insurance Agent telling them about the date and switch on that date to a competitor unless they pull support from CNN.
The letter and the phone calls are great, but mass cancelations of business that occurs on a single day that is connected directly to Glenn Geck is the next step.
Would it be possible?
Would it be possible to reward one of the sponsors who remove their ads from CNN with a free ad and link here on Daily Paul?
Apology Isn't Good Enough
Glenn Beck has slandered us AND threatened us (using the anti-terror laws currently being enacted, and advocating US military action).
An apology and a retraction are not good enough.
I want the apology from CNN, in the form of Beck losing his job.
Campaign's response
There is a radio inteview with Jesse Benton, Communications Director for the Ron Paul presidential campaign, on the Alex Jones website. It streams continuously, so you can hear it throughout the day.
Jesse speaks about our fundraising successes and about the recent smear against us by Glenn Beck.
http://www.infowars.com/
To hear the interview with Jesse, click on the red button called "Listen Now: Infowars main stream"
The page also has two articles related to the smear against us, in which Glenn Beck insinuates that Ron Paul supporters are potential terrorists in need of a response by the US Military.

Apology for Dr. Paul and his supporters
How about getting Beck to invite our man for an episode. Beck obviously has his head somewhere unfit for it to be and needs to get the truth. I've already sent a (nice) suggestion to this effect. Thanks! RonPaul2008.com
re: Video Available?
Where can I view Glenn Beck calling Ron Paul supporters "terrorists"? My grandparents are avid fans of his and my grandpa is a WWII veteran. If I can show him physical evidence of this, it will help. Already my grandfather is "open" to Ron Paul since I began spreading the message. I need this video to seal the deal.
Thanks in advance!

My letter to Glen Beck
You know there is a saying that says "free speech ends when you yell fire." By naming Ron Paul supporters terrorists you have caused similar damage. If even one person is injured because of it then your show can be used as evidence of incitement. You sir are a danger to yourself and others.
My letter to one of the sponsors.
I went to the Lazboy showroom on Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh last week to pick out furniture for our new home in Cary. But I was appalled by one of the TV shows you sponsor on CNN. On the Glen Beck Show, he right out described Ron Paul supporters as terrorist! I believe we should we should follow the constitution, so apparently following and knowing the constitution means you are a terrorist - According to Glen Beck. I am passive viewer of the Glen Beck show, and his comments are disgusting!
The furniture set I wanted to pick up was very nice, and exactly what my wife an I were looking for. After hearing Glen Beck's long discussion about comparing Ron Paul supporters to terrorist. I will NOT be returning to any of your stores to make the final purchase.

Educate Glenn Beck
Some are caught up in being offended by Beck's statements. Others are caught up in educating Beck on the true history of Guy Fawkes or V for Vendetta. Theres an awful lot of defensive responses to what many knew would likely be the result from a fundraising campaign centered around that damn movie. Those who swore this would'nt happen in the wake of the November 5th event were allowed to be ignorant of the issue. Likewise Glenn Beck is allowed to be ignorant of the issue as well. Instead of crucifying Beck for being every bit as dumb as those who chose to associate this campaign with violent events in history, maybe those responsible for creating this association could do a little damage control by educating Beck on exactly what a "money bomb" is. Of all the discussions about what Beck said going around the web not once have I seen the following-
The term or phrase "money bomb" originates from the term "Google bomb".
A Google bomb (also referred to as a 'link bomb') is Internet slang for a certain kind of attempt to influence the ranking of a given page in results returned by the Google search engine, often with humorous or political intentions. The phrase "Google bombing" was introduced to the New Oxford American Dictionary in May 2005 as both a noun and a verb.
Google bombing (GOO.gul bawm.ing) n. Setting up a large number of Web pages with links that point to a specific Web site so that the site will appear near the top of a Google search when users enter the link text.
Adam Mathes is credited with coining the term "Google Bombing." Since Mathes planted that first Google Bomb in late 2000, the practice has spread throughout the blogging community, inspiring four types of "Bombs". 1) Humor Bombs. 2) Ego Bombs. 3) Money Bombs. 4) Justice Bombs.
Money bombing (Mun.E bawm.ing) n. Setting up a large number of Web pages with links that point to a specific Web site for the purpose of rapidly raising money for charitable or political cause.
Don't get me wrong I donated on that day even though I thought the theme was a juvenile testosterone fueled idea that would have blowback. I just think we should be more conscious of those 4 red letters at the center of our R-3vol-ution and practice a little forgiveness. Without love in the dream it'll never come true.
Some in this movement would be doing themselves a great service by reading "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Green
Forgiveness frightens your enemies more than demanding their beheading.
A MILLION PEOPLE UNITED FOR RON PAUL
Yes, it is scary when you realize that the powers that be are trying to take away our freedoms. This is the main reason I support Ron Paul! However I'm not a terrorist and I told CNN that in an email! Anyway I've be trying to interest poeple in supporting a simple idea I had! Imagine if a million people united for Ron Paul by donating $5 or $10 dollars a week for the next 6 weeks! If United we could do this we could raise 30 million dollars in addition to the money bombs plan for this Dec. If anyone reading this has the means to make videos then please conside making videos about it! United we are a force and that is what really scares the powers that be! So lets show them we will not be affraid any longer!
Hold On Everyone!
Why does everyone feel the need to be so defensive about the attacks Ron Paul is receiving? C'mon people...this is a huge "Positive"! for the campaign.
Dr. Paul is fully capable of defending himself...his record speaks loud and clear.
We knew that it would only take time before he is seriously attacked. The reason for the attacks is because he is seriously gaining ground.
What did the media do before any of this?
Answer....they used to ignore Ron Paul. Now they don't do this.
Radio talk show host Jim Quinn used to have nothing but good things to say about him. Most of the time he defends all of Pauls platform...but now he like most of the hamsters who eat their young is attacking Pauls supporters. Why? Can Dr. Paul control who sends him money or who does or doesn't vote for him. What would Quinn and Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity do different if they were Ron Paul running for president? Besides the war...what?
Who likes the IRS?
Who wants smaller government?
Who wants less government sponsored programs?
Who wants our borders secured?
Who is against the NAFTA superhighway?
Who is 100% for one single candidate?
Why are certain talking heads so against Ron Paul and nobody else?
Why are the attacks on Ron Paul so blatant?
No other candidate is receiving anything like this in the Republican party.
By the way...I am a republican and I have managed to convince Democrats of switching parties to support Ron Paul in the upcoming Primary...according to Quinn...he questioned the constitutionality of this legal idea. Why Mr. Quinn?
Do you honestly think that a Republican is going to become president without winning Democrat supporters? C'mon Jim...my wife and I have supported you for years. And now these attacks? What for?
Jim Quinn, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, O'reilly, Medved, etall...you attack the Ron Paul following and question our motivations.
Now it's my turn...All of you in some way work for Rupert Murdock...owner of FOX News and Wall Street Journal and Radio Broadcasting...I think it's even more fair to question your allegiences since you are working for a man who is supporting Hillary and is also a close friend of Rudy Giulianni's.
This is what happened to Patrick J. Buchanan whenever he ran for president...many of his own abandoned him or attacked him. Called him a racist, separatist, isolationist, anti semitic, etc...
Pat Buchanan was the only candidate who spoke out against NAFTA and wanted our borders protected...well gee...looks like ole Pat was right all along.
Folks...let's not let these badgers get our goat. They have become Network Whores and will sell their souls to keep their spots either on the radio or tube.
These network whores want to pick a fight and are dying for a response.
I say, let's not help their ratings. Turn the other cheek and remain Positive. Stick to the issues.
These same network whores didn't stop Bill Clinton from getting elected.
They didn't get George Bush elected or re-elected.
They didn't stop the congress from becoming democratically liberal.
They are legends in their own minds and need an audience to bait.
These same geniuses have no problem with the US borrowing upwards of $500 billion from China and Japan to finance a war in Iraq.
There goes most of their credibility.
Hey Quinn, Hannity, O'reilly, Medved, Beck...take a look in the mirror and do a serious personal inventory. Why are you guys so vehemently against one single man?
Remember...no Republican will win unless he is able to win over Democrats. Reagan did this. Paul can too. By the way, Paul was the only one of the bunch of candidates who Reagan had a fond respect for.
Stop playing pretend Conservatism and find out what it means whores.
it's not the same
In this day and age of fighting the "War on Terror," being called a "terrorist" is a very serious accusation and not the same of being called just about any other name. I think we Ron Paul supporters can't afford to just "turn the other cheek" on this one. You make a lot of good points, though.
Wow!
I have a tendency to become passionate about things very quickly. As soon as I read the letter from our military partner I was fired up and had my finger poised to send an email to each of the sponsers. Then I read a comment asking everyone to calm down a bit, providing instances where CNN had included Ron Paul in their reporting. That coupled with this comment has brought me to the conclusion that something in the middle might be best.
Contacting CNN about the Beck Show and also sending a letter to Beck himself is what I will do now, but then again, sometimes I think that unless we start organizing a boycott that they laugh our letters off like a joke. I know I wanted to start a boycott against the Fox sponsors should they not invite Dr. Paul to their next debate. There are so many good points on either side of the coin. I can't say that I didn't expect the attacks against the good Dr. Paul to begin, I know they are fearful of what this revolution will bring, but to use blatant out and out lies and fabrications in not acceptable. Calling Ron Paul Supporters terrorists in this day and age is a dangerous and heinous thing to do.
But in the end, it is my hope that the voice of the PEOPLE will resound through the halls of the convention when Dr. Paul gets the Republican nomination.
Thank you
Thank you for understanding and as for as your concern about the Fox debate, it was canceled today because Mitt Romney refuses to participate. There is a dailypaul post about it. I'm sure that most of the people in Iowa (and I know quite a few) are insulted and mad as heck right now. Bad for Romney, good for Ron Paul :) I'm a firm believer that what goes around, comes around.
Kudo's
You understand what is happening. I remember how Kennedy tried to stand up and ask the American people to help him to fight against secret societies and those who would hurt America. He stood up against the FED and the ones who would destroy our freedoms. He was assasinated 10 days later. I was in Junior High music class when it was announced over the loudspeaker. Never have I seen so much despair for America and for the loss of such a great leader. Let it not be said that we did nothing. God Bless America and God Bless Ron Paul.
All I said was
Calling us terrorist was way out of line, and I am kindly requesting a retraction and apology to not just ron paul supporters but to ron paul himself whom had nothing to do with the planning or creation of the fundraiser! a boycott would not be a good thing for their programming, as ron paul supporters are growing in numbers daily.....
out of line
I agree calling us "terrorists" was way out of line. If Glenn Beck were calling us "fringe" or "wackos" or "nutcases" or "certifiably insane" or any of the other insults usually thrown at us, I wouldn't care. If we were living in the 20th century I wouldn't even care about being called a "terrorist," but these days with the "war on terror" and legislation passed that severely restricts our civil liberties and habeas corpus lying dead, being called a "terrorist" is a very serious accusation. It's only one step away from being defined as a "enemy combatant" and being thrown in jail indefinitely with no charges filed and no rights to an attorney. To me, it's like he's suggesting anyone who gets in the way of a more mainstream candidate's election chances deserves to be locked up!
My comment to Glen
Mr. Beck, you are a despicable example of a sensationalist media rat. Whatever happened to objective reporting? You know as well as anyone watching your program that you have falsely portrayed Ron Paul and his supporters as a threat to America. I gave 4 years of my life to this country in the Marine Corps and you have the audacity to imply that I'm a terrorist because I support Dr. Paul? You should be ashamed. I've come to expect this type of drivel from some uninformed blogger but you made yourself look like an idiot on national television. You're grasping at straws trying to slander this man and it's obvious you will stoop to any level to CREATE a negative light, even if it puts your integrity at risk. If you have issues with the man's policies you should make a substantive argument against those that you disagree with, not insult thousands of Americans that are out supporting the same freedoms that allow you to spat your nonsense on the air.
I e-mailed CNN
I suggested they do a trade, Beck to FOX and Judge Napolitano to CNN.
I also e-mailed the advertisers and receiving courteous responses:
I notice you advertise on the Glenn Beck show on CNN. Mr. Beck calls Ron Paul supporters “terrorists.” If he had made some racial slur you would no doubt have been swift to pull your advertisement for fear of being associated with such hate speech. Of course, you don’t necessarily endorse the views of Glenn Beck, but you can’t deny, as a Ron Paul supporter, I’m incensed and your association with the show damages your brand. It is real easy for me to avoid your products from now on, because I can’t get the association out of my mind. That’s just how the cookie crumbles. Lie down with dogs and you pick up their fleas.

Dear/Hello _______________,
"While I have been a loyal customer in the past I can't possibly continue to purchase your products or services when your company directly supports the Glen Beck program which has mischaracterized me as a terrorist. In a post 9/11 world, the word terrorist is as strong if not stronger than racial slurs in my view. I am a hard-working, peace loving, American citizen. Thank You So Much
For taking the time to post all of that information. I will begin now!
It seems that the attacks
are intensifying. A lot of propaganda we are fighting here. I think we have to make an example out of Glenn Beck. Somehow put so much heat on him, that nobody will dare to use propaganda the way they are. I don't like it, because I feel I am getting to his level, but sometimes we have to fight fire with fire.
Explain
Please explain to me how attacking CNN and Glen Beck helps to get Ron Paul elected? Simple question...give me a simple answer.
I will explain in more detail later, however
For now, let me say that it is VERY DANGEROUS if it becomes commonly accepted practice for people to start labeling *peaceful* Ron Paul supporters as terrorists. America is not the place it once was, nor the place that most people think it is.
After passage of the Military Commissions Act in 2006, the president has sole discretion to name anyone - any American citizen - a terrorist, have him arrested, no due process, no lawyer, no habeas corpus - and scurried off into solitary for up to 3 years.
It is extremely urgent that we fight this characterization peacefully, firmly but HARD. I will not be labeled a terrorist.
I am not a terrorist. We have to stand up to these egregious lies and liars.

I agree
... especially when you have the govt asking citizens to keep an eye out for "terrorists"... all we need is people to look at RP supporters & call their local TIA number (if it still exists? or something equivalent)
Branding RP supporters as terrorists will push people away from the cause... not the die-hards who really understand RP's message, but maybe those who are just warming up to the message.
Everyone is afraid of being labeled unpatriotic, and the "terrorist" label is much worse (esp given the consequences allowed under the new laws in recent years).
So I agree this must be dealt with firmly, and immediately. Last thing we need is for one person to get away with this, and others follow suit.
Thanks for bringing this to the forefront.

In stead of wasting your time attacking Glen Beck, you should spend your time staying on top of what Congress is doing. House bill HR1955 (the Homegrown Terrorism Committee Act) was passed by the House of Representatives unamiously on October 23rd and sent to the Senate. The same bill which is now S1959 is in the Senate Committee for Homeland Security for review (one of my senators is on the committee and I am staying in touch with her) S1959 is under review to see if it should be killed or put before a vote of the Senate. This is the bill that ALL Americans should be worried about and if it is put on the floor of the Senate to be discussed and voted on then we all have to call our Senators and stop it in its tracks.
This is why I don't waste one second on Glen Beck, Hannity or O'Reilly. We have more important issues to worry about right now and the best way to fight all of them is to get Ron Paul elected and stay on top of our Congressmen to voice our opinions on legislation being voted on now.
Stop and Think about what you are doing!
I know that all Ron Paul supporters are upset about Glen Beck and his comments but you all need to stop and think about the consequences of your actions. Personally, I wouldn't spit on Glen Beck if he was on fire. He only cares about getting attention and ratings and he is no different that O'Reilly. If it makes you feel better emailing Glen Beck and letting him have it then so be it BUT CNN has done nothing wrong and if you feel that Glen Beck is hurting their station then by all means let them know nicely but in my opinion to call ALL of CNN's advertisers ranting and raving because of Glen Beck is crossing the line. Keep in mind:
CNN has been the biggest media supporter of Ron Paul in the last several weeks. Jack Cafferty (two of Ron Paul's best video's start out with Jack Cafferty and his comments), Anderson Cooper 360 interviewed Ron Paul, the Situation Room has interviewed and covered Ron Paul almost daily, Lou Dobbs (supporter of the middleclass) stated on Nov. 9th that if Ron Paul doesn't win the primaries that he would be the best candidate to run on a 3rd party ticket. Yesterday, Lou Dobbs aired an email that I sent to him about how "we the people do have a voice and can stop the abuse and destruction of America"
Has anyone asked the campaign if Ron Paul would want his supporters doing this? NO
Why in the world would you want to bite the hand that feeds you. In my opinion, this whole Glen Beck issue has come not from Ron Paul supporters but supporters of the opponents trying to get us worked up, divide us and use us to discredit Dr Paul. All I ask everyone is to calm down and think about what they are doing and realize that we have so little time left and to quit focusing on the negative media and instead work harder on the positive. What we the supporters do can either help or hurt Ron Paul's chances of winning and I for one will not be used and fall for the tactics of his opponents. We need to be an example of what Ron Paul stands for, peace, truth and change.
