Russian Professor Predicts End of U.S. (WSJ)
MOSCOW -- For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few took his argument -- that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. -- very seriously. Now he's found an eager audience: Russian state media.
In recent weeks, he's been interviewed as much as twice a day about his predictions. "It's a record," says Prof. Panarin. "But I think the attention is going to grow even stronger."
Prof. Panarin, 50 years old, is not a fringe figure. A former KGB analyst, he is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats. He is invited to Kremlin receptions, lectures students, publishes books, and appears in the media as an expert on U.S.-Russia relations.
But it's his bleak forecast for the U.S. that is music to the ears of the Kremlin, which in recent years has blamed Washington for everything from instability in the Middle East to the global financial crisis. Mr. Panarin's views also fit neatly with the Kremlin's narrative that Russia is returning to its rightful place on the world stage after the weakness of the 1990s, when many feared that the country would go economically and politically bankrupt and break into separate territories.

interesting
but i dont think we will break up. they are talking about a new currency, and i think they are going to do that when or before the dollar collapses. i think the western nations will become sorta like the united states(several states held together by a centeral govt)and china, russia, and a few others will join together. just my observation, which doesnt mean much. we will see. i really hope im wrong, i would like to stay soveriegn.

and therefore, it isn't a CHOICE as to which states would belong to which country--it depends on which country holds the mortgage on the lands within the state.

I agree that the U.S. is headed for the breakers, but I don't think it will re-form according to the map the gentleman has put forward.
I don't know what will happen in 2010, but I don't think it will be particularly joyous.

During racial unrest in America, the predictions were that the West South-West was going to be independent Mexican, the Central, Mid-West and East white and the South Black.

Alaskans wanting to live
Alaskans wanting to live under Russia instead of the USA?! He might as well add to his prediction that Russia's government is going to ditch communism and fully embrace complete free market capitalism by then too.

The prof's been nipping too much vodka ...
It's obviously gone to his head.
i could see this unfolding.
the economic predicitons for the usa coming out of europe are... a loss of 1 million jobs PER month. by the end of 2009... the usa will be worse off than in the great depression years.
now factor in the environmental predictions for 2010...
i could see the break up of the usa in 2011. but due to the natural disasters world wide ... i don't see there being influence from other countries other than the ones on this continent.
given what's coming down the pipeline ... i imagine there will be a HUGE influx of mexicans into the usa and americans into canada... as it is seen now ... this would likely occur late 2010.
I can see breakup happening,
I can see breakup happening, because this isn't even our grandfathers' America, let alone the nation of our Founders.
I also think breakup may be the best hope of passing on our constitutional legacy to our children.
Foreign occupation? Don't think so. At least no place between Cape Girardeau and Lake Havasu City.
I notice the Russian softly says "Texas to be under the influence of Mexico". Not necessarily taken over or foreign occupied. Good call. They would not want to attempt "Red Dawn" down here.

We already gave it away! GET THAT GOLD FRINGE OFF MY FLAG!
The flags displayed in State courts and courts of the United States have gold or yellow fringes. That is your WARNING that you are entering into a foreign enclave, the same as if you are stepping into a foreign embassy and you will be under the jurisdiction of that flag. The flag with the gold or yellow fringe has no constitution, no laws, and no rules of court, and is not recognized by any nation on the earth, and is foreign to you and the United States of America. more information

Isn't that a "fringe" issue?
I couldn't care less about the US flag. I care about the founding documents. The flag is a silly prop of the statists, whether it has yellow fringe or pink polka dots.

The idea that the country
The idea that the country will break up along state lines is a little elementary, but I think he meant that as a rough guide. The events leading up to such an event will mean massive movements of people....possibly by ethnicity, into certain areas of the country. I think it's more likely that a country would swoop in a gain control of most of the country, rather than several countries taking a piece. That just wouldn't work.
However, I agree that a totalitarian government is much more likely.

Very Interesting Quote
In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what
Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties
than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to
control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation,
the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive
the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the
continent their fathers conquered.'

A lot of responses here are
A lot of responses here are in the spirit of our resistance. The point being made in the article is centered around what power is going to "buy" the US assets when we are dissolved as a Federal State.
There are over 100 Trillion USD$$ in financially engineered products floating around the globe (this is about the only product we can export for a profit). The owners of these debts (assets) are getting anxious and are going to call in their loans. When they do and we cannot pay, they will hopefully allow substitution of our hard assets: our factories, agriculture lands, homes, malls, power plants, cement plants, vehicles, etc.
This map just represents a methodology where the new owners of our assets may reach agreement in order to receive some kind of return on their investment. While we think we can "militia" our way out of this, given today's geopolitical realities, I think the best we can hope for is to be bought out by a reasonably benevolent power.
I think we all forget that we don't "make" anything in this country anymore. Our resistance may last a few weeks, but when the lights go out and millions have to feed their families and provide heat for their homes, the masses, small businesses, and corporations will be lining up to be sold (debts forgiven) to the highest bidder.
I hope my assessment is wrong, but I have yet to see anyone in our government address the loss of these ponzi investments that will continue to be unraveled around the globe. Our citizenry will never have enough capacity to pay for these financially engineered debts.
This is not such a far fetched idea
I posted this on a parallel thread on the same topic:
In the 1990's a book called "Civil War Two" presented a similar analysis. The author looked at demographics around the world where there are genocidal conflicts and assessed the US along those lines. His thinking is that the US could break up into three separate countries and that ethnicity will play a major role.
He sees the Southwest as being claimed as a Northern province of Mexico and the South coming under pressure to split as a predominately black populated nation, while the rest of the nation remaining under the control of those of European descent. He presents no timetable, but gives way points to watch.
Also, in "The Fourth Turning" predictions of the current crisis to be followed by a nation threatening conflict are fit into a long cyclical pattern of history. 1776, 1861, 1941, and 2020 are equivalent points in time in the patterns they analyze. Two of the last three cycles resulted in civil conflict, and the conditions are now prime for a repeat.
My own thinking is that we face an extraordinary future. I think the end of the industrial age for want of energy to fuel it will cause a major economic contraction. The "house of cards monetary system" which is now collapsing, I think was shaken by our arrival at peak oil production and related increased energy cost. We will have economic contraction from the shock of that collapse, but when the economy attempts to restart it will not be able to expand from energy constraints. A future with a constantly shrinking economic pie will cause all sorts of civil disorder. Up to this point, our rulers have been able to intrude into the free markets and rig the economy in favor of government and the privileged few at the expense of the many, because the expanding pie allowed for small improvements in the living standard of the average man. As the suffering increases, the inequities from the controlled economy will become more evident, but those in power are highly unlikely to restore freedom to economic activity, so conflict will erupt. The pain from revolution will be less than the pain from going along and the forces of nature will propel us into a fight amongst ourselves for survival.
It may not seem this minute that revolution would be worth the pain, but consider that when half the population is unemployed with little hope for work, people are homeless, cold, hungry and sick, then they will have little to lose by fighting back, and that is just not that far into the future.

The Unorganized Militia of the united States
Prof Panarin's premise has merit but his conclusions suffer from Euro and Russo -centrism.
At roughly a hundred million strong, and dug in (advantage defenders) the likelihood of the American militia allowing Europe, Asia, and Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos to divvy up the formerly united States approaches zero.
The most probable part of his scenario is his vision of a greater Aztlan, which, rather than being ridiculously microscopic is merely laughably small. Most of the people who left Mexico did so for a reason.
The more plausible danger from a balkanized Anglo-America is the emergence of a christofascist redneck theocracy arising from the heartland. (Important disclaimer, I'm not fearing the redneck portion of that scenario.)

And the reality in Russia is that
They are fighting a war of attrition against demographics. With a 25% alcoholism rate and having more Russian babies aborted than actually born, there won't be as many Russians around after the next couple of generations to envy their neighboring countries. Russian leaders know this, which is one reason why they issue passports to people in neighboring countries, and fight for them when they get bullied (Georgia being the most recent example). Straight from the imperial playbook.

Color me "unpatriotic toward the blessed Union", but I hope half his predictions are true.
However, his "Texas Republic" that encompasses the Deep South (?) and somehow ends up under Mexican control is sort of laughable. Texans control Mexico, economically, not the other way around, and Texans will never submit to "Aztlan". California, perhaps....not Texas.

Personally I would prefer 50 seperate autonomous states
Each independent.

Here here!
Or 50 autonomous states that have a very very thin federal government that's tightly bound by a written set of rules.
Novel Idea!
.
Civil War?
I just don't see Americans fighting Americans. We will turn our anger on the people responsible. I think that will be the leaders, the politicians. No former politician will be safe in this country when the "cookie" crumbles. I think if more of them undrstood that now they might not vote the way they do. (Unless they have already got that mansion in Dubai or that farm in Paraguay bought and paid for...and a quick flight out!)
If our worst fears are recognized and we are forced to fight to survive, I truly believe we will not fight other Americans. We will band together. As for the politicians and anyone else who stands against us, may God have mercy on their soul!
I do take issue with the arbitrary "border" lines that the Russian gentleman has proposed. I think 50 State militias will see that 50 State's sovereign rights with rule each of their lands. They will, once again, have leaders chosen by, and for, the people. (Or they will not stand.)
If this Country, as a whole, does fall the big winners will be all 50 States, individually! We will rebuild together from the ground up.
O Captain, My Captain, rise up and hear the bells!
Taking a second look at this "breakup" map...
...it's pretty damned funny, actually. So Cal and Arizona part of China? I think all the resident Hispanics just MIGHT prefer to be a part of Mexico, instead. Nevada and Utah part of China? I bet the Mormons would have something to say about that. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida part of Mexico? Sorry, I've lived in that area, and I just don't see that happening. Tennessee and Kentucky part of the EU? Too funny! This guy really DOESN'T have a clue, does he...?
http://groups.yahoo.com/g...
Exactly
If America breaks up, we will be independent of other nations. He might be on to something having the colonies being part of the EU. But the rest of the state will oppose foreign rule.
If they think Iraq is bad, just try to Occupy the US. The streets will be paved with blood.
You're thinking alliances and choices
What in today's world would make you think that any of this would be voluntary or that we would be given a choice?
I just happen to know that there are a HELLUVA lot...
...of heavily armed people out there. And - I could be wrong - but if anyone ever really did try something like this, it would be the catalyst for one very big and ugly conflagration. Assuming they try it before everyone is forcibly disarmed, of course (and good luck with that, too)....
http://groups.yahoo.com/g...
Like a "civil war" maybe?
it all makes sense to me. I don't think it's a viability, but it makes sense.
Oh sure! I didn't say the concept itself wasn't viable...
...I'm just saying the divisions he's conjured up are laughable. Were I capable (or cared enough), I could draw up a MUCH more realistic map of how things might break up when TSHTF. But instead, I think I'll go to bed, now. 'Night! :-)
http://groups.yahoo.com/g...
Consider what he sais, but don't take it as gospel.
This is not the only map he's put out regarding discussions of the collapse. A previous one just had Wa, Or, and Ca under Chinese influence. That map was more realistic, because China has very little influence in Idaho and states immediately south and east of it.
Area's where I think Panarin is wrong:
Alaska going back to Russia - Dream on buddy!
Different parts of the country going to different overseas countries. - I think he underestimates the American People. When pushed, we will not accept foreign rule over us or dictatorship. We will kill to be free. We did it once. We will do it again if they try forcing foreign rule or a dictatorship on us.
Idaho going to China - If that happens there won't be any chinese alive in Idaho, Period! Only rotting corpses. Don't believe me? Um, have you been to Idaho Mr. Panarin? (btw, I love Idaho. Gorgeous state. I vacationed there last summer and I had a wonderful time).
Area's where I think Panarin is right:
A break-up of the US could happen. 1 of the tipping points he's been mentioning is multiculturalism ripping apart the fabric that unifies us. Amnesty will bring in 20-30 million new socialist voters. That would forever kill our chances of restoring the constitution and fixing our country by participating in the political process. After amnesty, no amount of taking back the repub party will matter, period! So what? let's say we do it ok? We will still be drastically outnumbered by big gov't socialists. This leads to my next point.
Civil war. Panarin has talked about that as being 1 of the things to look for in a collapse of the US. When the citizens realize they can't achieve peace, prosperity, and freedom through participating in the political process because the people who control every aspect of that process are too corrupt and too entrenched they will fight, especially if they are hungry.
In closing, I'm no Panarin fanboy. The guy hates America. However, you should listen to him. There are parts of what he has been saying recently that do make a lot of sense.
Here's the problem
Throughout history, civil wars and breakups require cleaving points. Or the point of a gun (like germany post-WWII). There are none in the US. Sure, California always votes blue, but would the OC and San Diego join the Red States?
There are no solid cleaving points in the US even with your so-called importation of socialists through amnesty (If you ask me, Mexicans Illegals are some of the smartest capitalists around - it's brainwashed chicano leftist academes that paint a really distorted picture).
This is so easy to see, in order to make his point, Panarin has to draw these rediculous, artificial lines, which make no sense to anyone who actually has been around the US. Even as an ethnic minority that grew up in suburbia, I STILL feel like I'm more at home in the middle of Idaho or inner-city Chicago, than I do in Vancouver, or Paris.
Like I say, totalitarian unification is far more likely than civil war or breakup.
