What stops people from wanting to hear the truth?

I was just told that I drive myself crazy with politics by someone I thought I was waking up. It's hard to explain that I'm not driving myself crazy or that any of the real big picture has the least to do with politics (at least the personality red team/blue team politics most americans know).

I feel free, enlightened and happy. I actually feel sorry for people who have no intellectual curiosity. But I'm not conviced that is the entire problem.

Why do you think people are averse to the truth? Why do you think people think others are driving themselves nuts when all they are really doing is sharing fascinating information. I know that powerlessness is probably a huge part of it, but it's hard to explain an intellectual journey for the sake of enlightenment. Do they need to get graded on all learning? Is it just easier to believe what they hear on TV?

Or----have many people become "fed-up" with it and decided they were not interested in anything but their own little existence?

I'm not sure how to carry on a conversation anymore because 90% of the topics people have are straight from the TV and its all part of the big picture. Maybe they think I'm crazy because noone on tv talks like I do.

Can someone help me make heads or tails of this??

We are conditioned to believe what we believe

and it takes an extreme effort and attention to develop an open objective mind.

We believe what we believe based on incomplete information. John Dewey says, "The most pervasive fallacy of philosophic thinking goes back to neglect of context." Or we cling tenaciously to things that we don't believe because the information fits the mold we have constructed in our minds as in, going along to get along, or fitting in, or treating it axiomatic because granny said it. The classical logical axiom of non contradiction, tells us that it is either true or false.

A guy by the name of Ludwig Wittgenstein says, “Philosophy is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of language.” Our culturally shaped or inherited flaws in our thinking processes put us in a clear disadvantage when applying logic. Clearly our minds are adequate for logical thinking but our conception of language gets in the way because, whether true or false, language feeds our minds. We can employ fictional imagination or enjoy fiction. We just shouldn't call fiction true and we should strive to recognize the difference. If we don't have the facts or have complete confidence in the source of the information then that information lies on the brink of fiction.

Meaningful realistic thinking must avoid contradicting the truth. If we apply our own subjective values tainted by culture and language then we are dealing with things as we wish them and not necessarily as they are. The value of our lives is dependent on our value of logic. Resulting ambiguities in language and culture are the cause of argument used by disputants and the reason the world finds itself in such chaos.

Fortune Favors the Bold

All political thinking for years past has been vitiated in the same way. People can foresee the future only when it coincides with their own wishes, and the most grossly obvious facts can be ignored when they are unwelcome.

So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire by people who don't even know that fire is hot.

Stupidity and fear. That's

Stupidity and fear. That's it, there is no profound answer.

Their just stupid and fear being ostracized by the supposed societal norm or fear bringing the wrath of government on themselves or both. I don't even believe it's fluoride anymore. We all drank the same water and went to the same public schools and we were able to wake up and see the irrationality of whats going on around us. The only thing that makes sense is varying degrees of intelligence or lack there of.

I have always questioned everything and it often got me in trouble and all kinds of pressure to conform and shut up which only made me more determined. There used to be a bumper sticker when I was younger "Question Authority" Maybe we need to bring is back.

Yes, I think powerlessness

Yes, I think powerlessness is a big part of it. I have a grandfather who is very concerned about America's problems and talks about things often. But he always says "what are you going to do about it?", rhetorically, believing that there is nothing you can do about it.

Another thing is that most people are totally ignorant about it. Imagine if you knew nothing about, say, rugby, and a huge rugby fan talks on-and-on about it trying to convince you what team is better than another and why, and why you should care. You might want to get away or change the subject. Mathematics, religion, medicine - or anything else you may not already find interesting, even if it is relevant to your life.

It takes great strategy and skill to teach people. I think a great method is the use of analogies and comedy. One must also be temperate and calm. As soon as you get all excited about it and go on a rant, you lose people and look crazy.

Ditching the old truth

Having to admit that their own "personal truth" was bogus.
That someone else was lighting that light bulb of reality over their heads.
They have to admit that they got sucked in, and weren't thinking for themselves.
painful reality.

People believe from "accidents of birth" as Thomas Paine once..

said.

"You believe in the Bible from the accident of birth, and the Turks believe in the Koran from the same accident, and each calls the other 'infidel.' But leaving the prejudice of education out of the case, the unprejudiced truth is, that all are infidels who believe falsely of God, whether they draw their creed from the Bible, or from the Koran, from the Old Testament, or from the New."

It is called "brainwashing" at a young age. That is extremely hard to change Mike.
All Jews are bad, all Blacks are drug addicts and pimps, all Italian are mafiosos, all Scots are cheap.
These are examples of prejudiced opinions learned at a young age and from prejudism comes racism.

When I confront these apparant prejudisms, I get personally attacked and am called an ADL propagandist.

This is very relevant. It's transcripts from the Glenn Beck show

Glenn Beck: Valkyrie

Audio Available:
January 5, 2009 - 13:28 ET

What a better way to spend Christmas Day than in the movie theaters watching a movie about World War II and the Nazis...

GLENN: So I went to see Valkyrie, I think it was on Christmas Day. I said to a friend who I went with, we took our older kids and I said, there's nothing like the holiday, you know, to celebrate like a good Nazi movie. And we both found it really intense. And I was sharing in the break with Stu a couple of things that I thought of, and I want to share them with you. First of all, I thought of -- the first thing that I thought of was this is really a dangerous time for a movie like this to come out because it can give people just crazy ideas. And I thought, well, wait a minute, how long does it take for a movie to be made? This was made -- and I have no idea who was involved in it, what their motivation was but, you know, just liberal Hollywood. Was this movie made as a statement on George W. Bush, that he's taken us to fascism? Which I agree that they've laid -- both parties have laid the foundations for fascism. Whether we get there or not, I don't know. I hope not. But they've laid that foundation.

So was this a liberal thing to say that? And then on the other side, God forbid if you're not -- and I mean this sincerely. Please, if you pray with your family, please pray every night for our Secret Service, please pray that they are wide eyed and aware and they have God's finger behind them because, gosh, if anybody does stupid in today's world, we are just in for just nightmare trouble. So please pray for the Secret Service and our President and our incoming President.

Anyway, but you take all of that stuff out of it and then you look at it from this perspective. At what point do citizens say, "This is not my country anymore?" What was the line that Tom Cruise said, "I'm sworn to serve the German..."

STU: Country, not the party.

GLENN: Which is not true. They changed that. You swore an allegiance to Hitler.

STU: Oh, yeah. Specific allegiance to the man, not just the party but the man.

GLENN: So at what point do you say it's gone too far? At what point was the population of Germany saying holy cow, did we make a huge mistake and it's too late now, you know? I wonder if there's any good books on that or any good movies or documentaries. Has anybody ever read anything where it traces back the tipping point? Where is the tipping point on fascism? Because it doesn't just appear overnight. You know what I mean? It's a series of events that plant the seeds. And where is the tipping point in fascism?

STU: Well, you've talked about a bunch of times how Hitler was not elected with a majority. You know, he wasn't widely supported, but he wound up winning with a, you know, kind of mish mash sort of coalition. And then there were plenty of Nazis who saw him going too far. I don't even know that they -- did they even turn on fascism per se or did they turn on the --

GLENN: No, they didn't. Mussolini was wildly popular.

STU: Wildly popular.

GLENN: In the United States.

STU: In the United States. I mean, with Jonah Goldberg's book, you read that, Liberal Fascism, it was among the left, Mussolini was very popular.

GLENN: Oh, FDR. Hitler loved FDR. Mussolini was loved by FDR. I mean, it's -- you know, I went and I looked some stuff up in Mein Kampf. Do you know that Hitler wrote about the American civil war and states rights?

STU: No.

GLENN: Did you know that?

STU: Didn't reed Mein Kampf.

GLENN: Oh, you didn't?

STU: That's not on my Kindle.

GLENN: Oh, you should read Mein Kampf. It will blow your mind.

STU: It's poorly written, isn't it? I've always heard it's poorly written.

GLENN: But it will blow your mind, Stu, at how clear everything is and nobody really paid attention to it. And it sold more copies than the Bible. So everybody was reading it. Because I read it. When I first started trying to figure out what I believe in, I went back, because I am -- Beck obviously the last name and German, German descent although my people were over here in the 1800s and -- we saw it coming. And so I go back because I thought, what did the people that I'm obviously related to, what did they -- did they know? How do you do that? How do you go down that road? So I went and I read Mein Kampf. It's been 15 years. It will blow your mind. It will blow your mind. And in it he talks about, you know, the American civil war, or he has writings on the American civil war where he talked about the state creates -- the regime creates the states; the states don't create the regime. And he flipped it all upside on its head. And he was trying to do the same thing.

I mean, there was a tipping point for Hitler, and at what point did people say, "You know what, I shall say something," but they didn't. And then they said, "Gee, now it's too late." And the other thing that I thought of in watching that movie is -- and I don't know if you noticed this, Stu. Did you notice how many people were willing to step gladly to the table to topple that regime but only when they thought they were winning? If it didn't look like they were going to win, they were on the other side, strongly on the other side. "I'm against you, unless you're winning. Then I'm for you."

STU: I took that more as they actually did believe Hitler was bad, but they were just afraid.

GLENN: Oh, terrified.

STU: I mean, and it's easy to go back and say now, "Oh, well, this guy was a hero and everything and if I were back there, of course I would have wanted to kill Hitler.

GLENN: I don't -- I honestly -- see, that was the thing that wore me out. I'm not sure who I would have been in that movie.

STU: Yeah.

GLENN: You know what the best -- and I don't want to give it away, but at the ending there was just some words on the screen. I actually breathed a sigh of relief when I read the last part of it. Do you know what I'm talking about? See, we're not the same people on this. I breathed a sigh of relief because I kept thinking the whole time, I'm like, who are these people and what happened to them? And, my gosh, who would you be? Would you put your family at stake? Would you put your life at stake for that?

STU: Yeah. I think it would be so easy to convince yourself someone else will do it.

GLENN: Someone else.

STU: "I can't risk my family's life, I can't do all these things." And it's like -- you know, and not to mention that maybe I should work within the system to try to fix it. Maybe there's still a way.

GLENN: Or, "It can't last."

STU: Yeah.

GLENN: "It can't last. It's got to fall apart."

STU: Because this happened when the war was coming to a close.

GLENN: To a close. And so it's going to fall a part, it's going to fall apart, it can't last." Or the things that the Germans did say afterwards was, "No, we didn't believe those stories."

STU: Yeah.

GLENN: Because you don't want to believe those. Can you imagine if somebody said, "Yeah, your government is gassing Jews." You would say no way.

STU: They say that about Bush. They say, oh, he's torturing people here and he's killing people there indiscriminantly. There are some things, obviously there's always, you know, mistakes and tragedies and everything else but, you know, I do not believe -- and this goes for Clinton, for Bush, for Obama, I don't believe these people have the hearts to go in and murder people indiscriminantly. That's not the way we are.

GLENN: Remember when they were saying that Bill Clinton was bombing aspirin factories just to get his name out of it. Do you remember what I said, Stu? I said at the time if you believe that our President could kill innocent people to take his name off the front page of the newspaper, we are in bigger trouble than I think we're in. I just don't, I don't believe that and I don't want to believe that. And maybe that's the tipping point to where you really understand. Because right now I don't believe that. But when you do believe that but you choose not to believe it.

I'm going to harp on this a bit, sorry

hypnosis, hypnosis, hypnosis - People are talking to you, you are reaching them, you really make some great points, you fell all warm and fuzzy...
Two weeks later you run into them again, you ask how they liked AFTF, or whatever. They have not watched it. You are dumbfounded - they were so hooked, you just KNEW you had awakened them... what happened?

They were forced to chose to think in a new way, or to go turn on the TV. What do you REALLY think they did? There are still people you can awaken, but most people are literally wandering around reacting to post-hypnotic suggestions a LOT (especially about 9-11.) We cannot awaken a person from hypnosis with logic. I wish I had the "unhypnosis" technique to give you, I am trying to develop one. I am a person who took a free online course, realized much more than they tried to teach me because it coincided with my awakening. If some of the other good minds here would go take this course and help me develop an un-hypnotizing technique, we might pull off a little miracle. The course is free, it takes 14 hours of video watching - and read between the lines! http://www.hypnosis.edu/
If nothing else, you get a certification as a hypnotist - might be a barterable skill. But seriously, I think there is a key here that I am just missing. More brains looking at this would be a good thing. Or any experienced hypnotists who actually studied this in depth - maybe they taught unhypnosis at another level, I don't know.
I do hope someone will take this challenge, the course is interesting, if a bit dry. The implications of what they tell you, knowing what YOU know, are chilling. I think Feb 17 they intend to unleash the hounds of hell on the airwaves... we shall see.

The Blue Pill People

will come out when the economy tanks and all
those are exposed for there treasonous dealings.

Also I have been in heated discussions with many people since
Ron Paul started his Presidential run and they looked at
me then like a nut, but now they are hearing and most of
all studying the beliefs of Ron Paul and his followers
and are very excited to hear answers to the problems we are facing.

So I think people are listening but until there fork
is hard to use { no food } and there TV's are off
and they come back to reality they also start awakening
from there deep sleep.

Obamanomics will start the Revolution in HIGH gear , right now
we are cruising and gathering recruits to Freedom.

I couldn't resist responding....NICE POST!!

This subject has been #1 in my mind a lot....partly because of my work (sorting committed people from uncommitted) and partly because of all the action on the poiltical scene this year.

People will keep you up all day and night with their "lingo" of sincerity and attempts to convince others that they really want the TRUTH.

The acid test is this:
True truthseekers make changes congruent with the new "light" they receive. They MAKE CHANGES...period. They seek facts, knowledge and "truth" so that they can make informed intelligent CHANGES...not so they can debate, make excuses, justify reasons or avoid change....but so they can change from what isn't working to what can, may or will work.
Discussion is to eliminate error for truth seekers......not just to open the door for more "options".

Here is one for you

I told my young doctor about Ron Paul and he dismissed him as a kook. Later he got back to me and told me a colleague of his can't say enough about Ron Paul.

I guess it helps hearing the truth from people your education level rather than below. After all, what do I know.

Don't feel bad,

the two most common elements in the universe are Hydrogen and Stupidity.

Never argue with people who know the truth. Would you tell GW the truth, he already knows the truth. Right ?

I love to piss them off though. You too ?

A man's got to have a hobby.

It's Also Too Satisfying...

..to put my thumb in the eye of some cretin getting in my face. Well, metaphorically speaking, of course. I'm much too much the wuss to actually seek physical conflict.

The Freedom Formula: Au + Ag + Cu + Pb

The lie is too powerful...

People respond to lies of reassurance out of fear. They don't want to believe the world is as scary, dangerous or corrupt as it actually is. They actually do believe the "cavalry will ride to the rescue." The world does not work that way. It rarely does. Did you know that the first Greek "comedies" were not intended to be funny? The only thing that made them "comedies" was a happy ending. Those who genuinely believe in the Bible should know this better than anyone else. This earth is the Devil's domain. That doesn't mean we should surrender in despair. It means, this world is a test of character. Only those with real character will do the "right" thing because it is right rather than because there will be an "immediate, worldly reward."
Those that don't believe in the Bible or pretend to do so know the only probable way for worldly gain is "every man for himself."

What stops people

from hearing the truth? The tv is to loud.

Where to begin?

Disinformation on a mass scale. People claiming to be something they are not. You must understand, some people suck from the very teat of the beast we are trying to kill. They like the check. They like the benefits. They like to live in a world and pretend everythings ok. They think the beast takes care of them. Some people are so indoctrinated, they become part of the beast. Agents for the beast. What they don't understand is the beast will eventually consume them too. The beast has no loyalties. He only uses, to justify his means. Understand who you talk too.

"A cadre of hard core believers is the key to success. The total numbers and percentages are less important. Our job now is to plan for the next phase. As was the case in the campaign, this continued effort will logically continue to be a grass roots effort and not a top down rigidly controlled central operation. Most important will be the continued emphasis on the message. That message, simply put, is the message of human liberty." Ron Paul

great thread!

~
thank you for bringing it up. It was a great pleasure to have at least four of my friends... make their own point to tell me ... that they had watched Ron Paul's Rally for the Republic speech on CSPAN and were highly impressed!

That speech really was a winner...

Now, aside from that rare moment of clarity, I was talking with another supporter, asking him, why is it that the truth is so crystal clear to us, and others can't see it? I don't get it! He mentioned...have you ever heard of The Four Temperments?

Yes, I know there are variations to this theme, but it essentially states that different personality types are wired differently (my thought).

The largest group is the guardians...the status quo, traditional, trust authority...seek security, etc.

The rationals only comprise 5-10% of the population, are problem solvers, value intelligence and are rigorously logical and fiercely independent in their thinking.

... You get the idea, we think different and wonder why everyone else can't ... but others are stuck and it takes a helluva lot to drag them from their comfortable mindset.

It all starts to make sense if you check it out...

agree - great thread

I have come to this conclusion also and have started targeting people by my assessment of their personality type. For example, there seems to be a large number of entrepreneurs in the RP movement - this would seem to be a good group to target.

Appreciate your post as it I'm sure reading "the Four Temperaments" will help me target people more effectively. Great thread.

"...it's hard to explain an intellectual journey for the sake...

... of enlightenment." Beautifully stated. You are right, it is easier to go with the current. These same people will ask you why you don't go along with Ron Paul in a couple of years. They will flip the knowledge, later on, when the current runs towards freedom. You just need to maintain patience. But most importantly, keep doing what you are doing. You are having an effect. ( Congratulations. Your friends are still sheep, but you have become a shepherd. You are concerned about those that are being attacked by the wolves, and the sad part is that most sheep don't understand that they are being led astray.) Keep up the Good Work!!!!

I just thought of another reason

People who consider themselves well-informed and involved are afraid to admit they may have been wrong. This works at all levels.

..

Yes!

Amazing reason! I definitely think this is true. So many people will just block out the truth, saying something along the lines of "That's outrageous!"

This is an experience I just had today: a friend told me she would never support Ron Paul or ending the federal reserve because her siblings worked there! I do understand about the job; but to shun the candidate?

Pride: one of the seven deadly sins

"The use of 'Conspiracy Theorist' or 'Truther' as a derogatory -- as an epithet almost -- is something the propagandists have perfected over the decades, and it's a useful tool for eliminating articulate dissent."

This is so true, Mike.

People who pride themselves on being "well informed", are harder to talk to than people who pay no attention to what is going on. They don't see their MSM information sources as a problem.

Sometimes it feels like you are taking your life in your own hands when you to talk to someone who sees themselves as "well informed"

My boss is like that to a degree. She is pretty staunchly Democrat.
She was pro Clinton, but if she didn't get the nomination, she said McCain would be her 2nd choice.

I was surprised because I know she leans to the Democratic side, and I asked her why McCain. I don't remember all her reasons, which she stated quite firmly and matter-of-factly, but one I do remember was that he has foreign policy experience.

I knew better than to argue with her, but I thought to myself, if his foreign policy is BAD, then his foreign policy "experience" wouldn't get points from me, but oh well...

Anyway, when Obama got the nomination, all of a sudden McCain was the worst thing in the world and she talked about Obama like he was sliced bread. Not sure why the change. (Oh, oh! Maybe that was it. The word "change"....who knows...lol)

This from the "well informed".

Go figure.

Study is a Luxury Few Can Afford

Sure, information is free but the time it takes to drill down into the nuggets of truth is not.

Standard working couple get up in the morning, chug some coffee, take a shower, drop off kids at school/day-care, bust hump at work all day while putting up with petty bosses and even pettier company rules, come home hopefully early evening, maybe get a bite to eat, have a drink, put kiddos to sleep and fall down exhausted.

They may have the tuition money but no time to sit in class.

Time is the luxury few can afford, and the elite exploit that fact.

Socialists are Everywhere

You have a very valid point!

You have a very valid point! I come from a very middle-class family and these were the values I was taught.

Bingo

The luxury of time. People do not have TIME for the truth and why those who do, better get busier.

I just finished watching "Buy the Ticket Take the ride." Smack!!!!!! There is that pain of another piece of my "reality" being stripped away, followed buy an uncontrollable bout of laughter until I cry. For me, it is a moment of Liberation. Like the first time I heard Dr.Paul, Harold Pinter, read Tolkien or shortly after I stopped watching TV back in 95 and started thinking for myself again.

In regards to your topic, below this post is a multitude of reasons why people are averse to the truth. Lies, pain, denial, mind control, trust, fear etc. We have come to accept these as foremost truths and the "norm." The Truth has become so foreign it has become frightening because of it's unfamiliarity.

People also said that I was going crazy, going to become isolated, and that I needed to take a break from all this. I was this, I was that. I was becoming something they were not familiar with. Then also, like you, I am saying to myself that this feels good, I'm happy, I feel like I'm growing and evolving. I'm thinking that this is some of what it feels like to be free and yet some of the people that are the closest to me find this uncomfortable? What a head trip.

Some just don't want to talk about truths, facts or personal experience let alone seek them out. I believe that very few in modern civilization have ever experienced true freedom. I don't feel sorry for the ones today that choose not to explore a world of "fascinating information" because tomorrow is another day that they just might choose to. So for me, like the good Dr.Paul said, I simply seek out and enjoy my moments of freedom and the chances that I get to be in the presence of free individuals with the hope that many others will finally see that true freedom is awaiting them.

I look forward to reading Hunter's biography.

I think most people feel the "heat" of the "potato" and turn off their ears and head to what you are saying. Handling the truth is uncomfortable and is sometimes hard to handle. Not everyone is up for that.

.....Or I might just be really hungry for a potato right now.

I suggest you stop talking

I suggest you stop talking to them. Dr. Paul (on the CampaignForLiberty.com site) is clear about this.

1) Don't try to convert people. Spend your time finding people who think like you do. Point them to DailyPaul.com and CampaignForLiberty.com to learn more and get active.

2) Dr. Paul only needs the vote of 3% of the voters in your area to have an affect. You see most elections are won (or lost) by 3% or less. If we can rally these people we can vote out non patriotic incumbents.

Keep your goals small and within reach.

2 weeks, 4 days... Brent, are you for real?

I agree with part of what you are saying but I am always a little suspicious of someone who has only been around for a couple of weeks.

The problem is you are spreading misinformation

A) Listen to what Ron Paul says. He doesn't want you converting people.
B) Spreading your laughable 9/11 crack-pot theories helps no one, and it certainly harms Ron Paul.

Please go where your heart

Please go where your heart and mind lead you.

However, proselytizing to converting people is not the way Dr. Paul wants us to move forward.

If you join the CampaignForLiberty.com and take the training you will find that Dr. Paul has very specific goals to return the Republic. Converting people is not on the agenda.

Kind Regards.

My trip down the rabbit hole has been long and intense

I do not proselytize. I am not driven by Ron Paul's agenda. He's a good guy. But he's not the pinnacle of awareness by a stretch.
