Where should I move to live off a farm?

Please, give me your opinion!

I live in Alaska and have a forty acre land with about fifteen acres of good soil. The summers here are very short. We can still plant vegetables, potatoes, carrots, etc., but it is not very profitable.
I think about going to a State with not so extreme weather to be able to live off the land. What do you think? The only thing that makes me stay here are my in-laws (I hate the idea of separating my wife and kids from them) and it is hard to beat the freedom here. However, after 3 weeks of -40 below and colder, it makes you think twice about staying around!!

We are looking for a quiet place, good community, a good place to be self-sufficient. A place that we could survive off the land. Four seasons would be nice. Not too expensive. Not too many regulations. I know, I'm looking for Paradise!

Almanac It

You should use the Farmers Almanac to check out where might be a good growing zone for you....Check the weather and so on....Next search for land prices www.homeandland.com and see what fits your budget.

Indiana

Indiana residents and voters generally oppose regulation more than their neighboring states (especially in rural areas), there's lots of good farmland, and they definitely have four seasons. The Hoosier state also seems less prone to real estate bubbles. Each county has a "county seat" town that often is small; some of those towns are doing OK, some are suffering these days. I don't live there so I can't help you sort that out; I'm just familiar with it due to family ties & going to college there.

I found a great farm in the internet...

I found a great farm on the internet in Indiana, a very good price, good water and very nice timbers. I will check more about it. Anybody know more about Indiana? Thanks.

The Survival Podcast

It sounds to me that you and several other DPers could benefit from www.thesurvivalpodcast.com. It's a great production of all things survivalism through a libertarian (small L) point of view. I look forward to my morning commute because of it! Good luck in your decision!

You should live in Estonia

I have compiled an index of the most libertarian countries in the world and an index of the safest countries in the world. I combined them and Estonia came out on top as the safest libertarian country in the world. If you want to know what the rest are, the order was: Chile, Canada, Iceland, Switzerland, Ireland, Slovak Republic, Cyprus and Lithuania. The index is about to change though because all of the 2009 statistics are coming out so I will have to remake it.

My home state of California might be a good choice.

But Nebraska might be more to your liking. South Dakota is a really nice place to live (was raised in the Black Hills area). Neither Real ID system nor Patriot Act are currently recognized. One problem though. the Dakotas' growing season is relatively short. Iowa's weather is agreeable to vegetation (warm and humid throughout the growing season). Iowa's also a good place to raise a family.

California? Really?

Come on, that's can't be a serious suggestion.

http://federalfallacy.com

Isn't California the state

Isn't California the state where it's illegal to burn wood in certain areas? A while back someone here at DP mentioned something like that.

As far as I know.

good / bad about Idaho

Up north is a very strong, organized liberty movement, and a lot of cold weather. In the SW there is the "metropolitan" area, but it is the liberal holdout of Idaho. In the remote areas of Idaho, you can find some real gems. Some hot springs, even. This high desert country just needs a little drink and it really blooms, too.
Bad news? Water rights will probably come to a boil soon. Water tables dropping in some pretty crucial locations.

When the shit really hits the fan you can buy mine

va. 14 acres no neighbors either side . creek, apple tree, plum trees. about half clear half woods. values haven't seemed to drop here much.Actually last we heard they weren't going to raise our assesment much this time lol. See what it says on the web about hanover County Va.. They think they are the sh** . But Citibank cut off our equity line. Bam just like that even though we were ahead on payments. said property values might fall. We weren't even using it. What we owe is 130,000 below appraisal.

North Central Pennsylvania...

Land is around $900 to $2,000 per acre. Where I live the nearest "city" with a mall is 50 miles away. The high point of my property is 2200 feet above sea level and this elevation is common on most of the mountain tops that dot the landscape. Green house growing can get you through November to April and then you can go to the raised beds for summer planting. Raising quail at the moment and getting more birds come April. Come out to Pennsylvania. We are also in the process of taking our local republican party back.

How is the economy...

Government regulations, water, etc?
Thanks.

How about Montana?

I think that state has the least regulation.

Montana is high in my list...

But looks like the don't have many trees there. I need to check better, I don't want to be too windy.

Hi mozarker,

We alredy contacted by email about your farm. Great place. Thank you.

Thought it might be you.

Wasn't sure it was you but thought it might be since you're from Alaska. Thought it wouldn't hurt to get the information out just in case and others might get a chance to see it. Some people are looking for a place that's already settled, like mine, and wouldn't take years to make it produce.

Your land is perfect...

If i had the cash righ now... Your farm is high in my list!

To live "off a farm" try moving into the city.

if you're in the usa -- then

if you're in the usa -- then ideally move to the pacific northwest.

why?

• Own land 250+ ABOVE sea level. ideally between two mountain ranges. closer or on the east side of a mountain.

• Have a structure below ground that can withstand TREMENDOUS, TREMENDOUS, TREMENDOUS shaking. did i mention tremendous??? the worst you can imagine. ALL over the world. NO one, NO where is excempt.

• Own land AWAY from cities.

• Your land must be able to grow food.

• Store seeds for grains, veggies, grass.

* Supplies for first 2 years -- then 5.

• Your land should be away from ALL bodies of water: oceans, lakes, and even rivers.

• Your land must have a good source of underground water so you can drill a well. Carefully test your water.

• Pick land in areas away from Northern Europe or Eastern USA and Canada.

• Get out of intangible assets.

Get Land, Gold, Food, Water.

Water. Water. Water. It will be THE MOST valuable asset.

I'd say

I would have to say Montana..A lot of liberty minded folk. The state is leading the country right now in alternative energy. They are big Ron Paul supporters. They want nothing to do with all the BIG government nonsense.

Upstate NY surprisingly still has very cheap real estate for sale.

Maybe check out the free state project in New Hampshire as well..

How are prices in area that are not so windy

With good water? Thanks.

Please!

The very last place you want to be is upstate NY or anyplace NY. This state is a regulatory nightmare. They are so busy telling law-abiding people how to live, yet they can't be troubled stopping criminals from victimizing us. Owning a gun here is next to impossible. I live in upstate NY and I am determined to get out as soon as possible. And one more thing, we have the highest property taxes in the NATION.

You are less of a target in Alaska with relatively few people, plenty of guns and game, snow/ice for drinking water and lots of wide open spaces.

If I were you, I'd order up a few years' worth of survival food, consider doing alternative energy (6 months solar and 6 months wind?) to help ease costs, and check out greenhouse or hydroponic farming techniques. The cost of all these together would be dwarfed by the cost of moving and buying more property. Besides, time is running out and you don't want to be caught between a rock and a hard place (dollar devaluation, for instance) while in the process of relocating to a totally new and strange location where you don't have a single friend..

Not sure about that....

...the single largest FEMA camp is in AK and will hold more than 2million prisoners.
