Pranks involving electronic road signs stir worry
By Jim Suhr, Associated Press Writer

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. – Pranksters in at least three states are messing with electronic road signs meant to warn motorists of possible traffic problems by putting drivers on notice about Nazi zombies and raptors. And highway safety officials aren't amused.

The latest breach came Tuesday during the morning rush hour near Collinsville, Ill., where hackers changed a sign along southbound Interstate 255 to read, "DAILY LANE CLOSURES DUE TO ZOMBIES."

A day earlier in Indiana's Hamilton County, the electronic message on a board in Carmel's construction zone warned drivers of "RAPTORS AHEAD — CAUTION."

And signs in Austin, Texas, recently flashed: "NAZI ZOMBIES! RUN!!!" and "ZOMBIES IN AREA! RUN."

We don't care

Most of us here are prepared for the "Zombie Apocalypse", NWO, or whatever you want to call it...

hilarious! the people stuck in the traffic are the real zombies!

those signs DO serve a purpose and I like when they are used for traffic issues, missing child alerts, etc but here in GA the governor has used them to alert us to his "executive orders" which I feel gets us on a slippery slope towards using them for propaganda too.

Interfering with public safety is something that really pisses me off.
A $250.00 fine? Ought to move the decimal two places to the right in my opinion.
Now, if these twerps had enough intelligence to post something important, like (nah, I'm not giving them any ideas) I might feel a little sympathy for them.
Look mommy, I made the sign say something stupid! Tee-Hee!
That's nice junior, now come upstairs you're dinner is getting cold.

oh please....like you've

oh please....like you've EVER gotten important information from construction road signs like the ones that were tampered with.

...i'll put it this way...would you rather have kids spray painting on buildings, or messing with pointless notifications on the side of a highway?
I find this quite hilarious.

Think for yourself, question authority

I was tempted to offer a few.

Such as 'End The Fed' or 'Down With The Queen' or 'Caution: Doughnuts Ahead'

Sorry, have to disagree with

Sorry, have to disagree with this one. When it warns of road closures coming up on a road that I use regularly, that is very useful information.

Or when it tells me in advance that a road is closed so I can turn around early, or detour or whatever, that's useful.

So... yes, I have "gotten important information" from the electronic signs before.

But, yeah, I think it's funny. But I think it shows again the astounding incompetence of our government (you could say it was the vendor, but the govt chose to purchase it without checking security). From what I've heard, these things are trivial to hack in to.

Nazi Zombies! Run!

Besides the usual rush hour traffic, commuters in Austin, Texas, Monday also had to deal with reports of an imminent zombie attack.

Two city construction road signs near the University of Texas were hacked to display the warnings, reported the Austin American-Statesman.

The electronic signs, which usually warn motorists of traffic detours, instead included warnings such as "Caution! Zombies More..Ahead!" and "Nazi Zombies! Run!!!"

The signs also instructed motorists to "run for cold climates."

The hacking occurred within weeks of various articles appearing online with descriptions of how to hack into these road signs -- which point out that such an act is illegal.

According to a KXAS-TV story, Austin officials weren't too amused by the warning, noting the signs are used to report road conditions and accidents. They are working to find out who hacked the system.

Thanks for making me laugh*)
