Q: Polls show a majority of Americans are concerned about the H1N1 virus (swine flu), but also about the safety and efficacy of the swine flu vaccine. Is it ethical to say no to this or any vaccine? Are there valid religious reasons to accept or decline a vaccine? Will you get a swine flu shot? Will your children?

We do not raise children for ourselves alone, or for themselves alone. We raise them for the world. Educating a child is not so that she can live well, or not only so that she can live well. It is to enable her to make a genuine contribution to society.

When we refuse a child a vaccination we are violating the rationale for having children. We are unnecessarily endangering others. Not only is one's own child at risk. Vaccinations are a barrier against contagion. In unvaccinated populations everyone is at risk.

I am aware of the objections to vaccinations. Certain vaccines may prove ineffective or even dangerous. There is a risk attendant to any medical procedure, any drug or intervention. But as a class over the years vaccines have wiped out diseases that were scourges of humanity. Can there be a more urgent religious imperative than to prevent harm to one's own child, and to others?

There may be questions on the margin. Specific vaccinations can be doubted, or specific ailments borne. The principle endures. I have gotten a flu shot each year and will get the swine flu shot this year. So will my family.

To vaccinate is a religious obligation. To refuse protection for a serious disease is a sin.

I know it's a drop in the bucket compared to all of the vaccine propaganda out there, but I doubt this story would have aired at all a year ago. The vaccine debate has been gaining momentum recently on both sides, and the news station would have never done this story if there wasn't some interest in it.

Oddly enough, I don't feel the pressure to vaccinate myself or my children from places like my kids' school...this is a Catholic school, and we already have seen a few cases of H1N1. However...lots of social pressure. Most parents are asking me if I plan to vaccinate. I just answer that I haven't been doing flu shots for myself or my kids and we have been just fine in the past. I haven't read anything that says this flu is more contagious than any other. One child in a neighboring school died of H1N1, but I heard that this child had underlying health problems. My kids don't have asthma or heart conditions, so even if I thought the vaccination was a good idea, I don't feel it's necessary. Then I tell them of my friend's child, now a teenager, who is autistic...his mom is convinced this was from vaccines given, even though he was a micropremie. Why take these kinds of chances?

All of these parents have backed down when I go to all this trouble of explaining my position.

I was a vendor at a 'wellness event' in NH recently. It was for the city employees alone---teachers, police, office workers--all of them.

As fate would have it, I ended up next to the flu vaccination room. I got to witness hundreds of people roll up their sleeve and get their shot---standing up like cattle.

There must have been a major employee-wide campaign to attend the event and get the shot. The line extended out the door several times throughout the long day. There was an attendant who asked about thimerosal allergies before people entered.

The vaccinated acted like they had done themselves a tremendous service and engaged in an almost tribal solidarity.

As people passed by my booth, I tried to discuss the importance of D3. I realized that getting the shot allows people to be lazy, unaccountable, and irresponsible in regards to their health. Why buy a $25.00 dollar of supplement when I can get a shot for free?

Most medical doctors do not report vaccine injuries. They blame something else, etc. This has been happening a long time. The medical community has NO IDEA of the number or severity of vaccine injuries. They have refused to collect the data out of fear the public would stop vaccinating. i could hear the tv in the other room, which was on fox news, had a doctor saying how dangerous it was NOT to take the vaccine. he went on to say something about merisol containing mercury and there being a merisol free version of the vaccine. his tone was that of your typical, fear mongering, fox report.

i know i'm not spelling that word right (merisol). i really haven't read anything about the vaccines. all i need to know is that if the media is telling me how important it is to do, then it's probably in my best interest to do the exact opposite.

Two years after that, Congress approved Vaccines for Children, an entitlement program that delivers free vaccine directly to providers for uninsured and underinsured children in all 50 states and six major cities, including Philadelphia. A rising number of California parents are choosing to send their children to kindergarten without routine vaccinations, putting hundreds of elementary schools in the state at risk for outbreaks of childhood diseases eradicated in the U.S. years ago.

Exemptions from vaccines -- which allow children to enroll in public and private schools without state-mandated shots -- have more than doubled since 1997, according to a Times analysis of state data obtained last week.

The rise in unvaccinated children appears to be driven by affluent parents choosing not to immunize. Many do so because they fear the shots could trigger autism, a concern widely discredited in medical research.

But with autism rates rising, some parents find that fear more worrisome than the chance that their child could contract diseases that, while now very rare in this country, can still be deadly.

Last year, a 7-year-old boy triggered a measles outbreak in San Diego after he returned, infected, from a family trip to Switzerland. His parents had chosen not to vaccinate him or his siblings.

"The more children we have in our communities that are not immunized, the more likely we are going to have massive outbreaks," said Dr. Gil Chavez, deputy director of the California Department of Public Health’s Center for Infectious Diseases.

In all, more than 10,000 kindergartners started school last fall with vaccine exemptions, up from about 8,300 the previous school year. In 1997, when enrollment was higher, the number of exempted kindergartners was 4,318.

Statewide, only 2% of kindergartners had exemptions. But The Times found they were enrolled in a relatively small number of schools. Parents who sign affidavits saying vaccines are “contrary to my beliefs” are most likely to send their children to schools in affluent areas -- many of them public charter schools and non-Catholic private schools.

The Times found that 1 in 11 elementary schools statewide may be at risk of an outbreak of an infectious disease such as measles, mumps or whooping cough. It's a risk some parents are willing to take.

"As a parent, I'd rather deal with my kid dealing with measles or mumps and sit with them in a hospital . . . than taking your chances on a shot and having irreversible effects," said Kim Hart, a mother of two in San Clemente.

In California, sending a child to school without all or some of the required shots is as simple as filling out a form, a policy that's been in place for decades.

Parents' fears grow

For generations, most children went unimmunized only if their parents couldn't afford the shots, a problem now remedied through federal funds. A tiny percentage of children cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

But as parents' fears about vaccine safety have grown, the demographics of the unvaccinated have shifted substantially. Although fewer than 2% of kindergartners at traditional public schools and Catholic schools in California had exemptions last fall, more than 4% of kindergartners at other private schools and nearly 10% of those enrolling in charter schools were exempted.

In south Orange County, 16 of the 38 elementary schools in the Capistrano Unified School District had high enough exemption rates to be at risk, as did nearly a quarter of the 26 elementary schools in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

A Times analysis found other concentrations on the Westside, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the central Orange County coast, and in the southern San Fernando Valley.

At Ocean Charter School in Del Rey, near Marina del Rey, 40% of kindergartners entering school last fall and 58% entering the previous year were exempted from vaccines, the highest rates in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Administrators at the school said the numbers did not surprise them. The nontraditional curriculum, they said, draws well-educated parents who tend to be skeptical of mainstream beliefs.

"They question traditional knowledge and feel empowered to make their own decisions for their families, not deferring to traditional wisdom," said Assistant Director Kristy Mack-Fett.

Some parents at the school, which opened in 2004, said they struggled between what they believed was healthiest for their children and the risk that choice might create for others.
