The shape of things to come...

As background, West Essex county in New Jersey is pretty much a quiet, suburban area. Middle to upper-middle class folks..nice neighborhoods...good schools...you get the picture. Not Mayberry, but a nice place to live.

Recently, the erosion has reached up this high. A lot of closed storefronts. A lot of houses for sale...and not selling. A lot of people out of work.

I'm self-employed (which only means I can't collect unemployment) and have been sitting for the better part of four weeks now. Usually, I'd go down the the local pizza place and pickup some delivery work. Unfortunately they are so swollen with other unemployed men (laid off before my problems started) that they have no use for me. Neither did any of the other food establishments in the area.

Other low-paying, unskilled jobs are similarly unavailable due to the glut of the newly-unemployed. Can't even get a job as a check out clerk in the local food store.

The other day, I heard on the radio that in Verona, a neighboring town, a gas station attendant was shot and killed during a hold-up.

Remember....not Mayberry...but a nice place to live. Well, that got shattered. That stuff 'just doesn't happen here'.

Luckily my wife is a dental hygienist and is still safe (for now). One of her patients is a police detective from yet another town. He was talking about the robbery/homicide and also, another shooting in Montclair that I hadn't even heard about! On top of that, a major robbery in the town he worked for! She didn't get the details on the other two incidents but to have three in one day is just outrageous!

So it's not just Los Angeles..not just Detroit. It's coming home to roost.

However, having lived here my whole life, i can say without a doubt, the relative safety of the streets (not counting cops, who i consider the biggest threat) is about as high as its ever been.

I'll move there to get away from high taxes :>) I'm in NE, 1040 sq. foot 35 year old house, $2000 per year in taxes and rising fast. No chance of them getting lowered even in current economic conditions and decreasing house value conditions.

Yeah, the state average is $5700 per year I believe. We're one of the lucky ones, I suppose, at slightly more than $4k annually. I have no intention on remaining in NJ very long... just need to figure out where the right place to go is.

I think though, in general the crime rate is much, much lower then it was only ten years ago.

I've heard nothing about that one or the big robbery in Bloomfield. Nada.

A lot of stuff never makes it's way to the news. I've heard from cops in town that there have been a lot of suicides in Essex Fells (big money country) but it never makes the paper.

That's why I say, it's probably worse than we all think it is at this point.... let alone down the road. By the time everyone catches on, it will be WAY too late...

I hate NJ

I am stuck here because my wife is from Elizabeth. So I am in Elizabeth now for about 4 years and my property taxes have gone up for a 1800 sq. ft. home from $5800 to $7300 in just under 3 years. I take the PATH train from Newark into Manhattan and have noticed there are less people on trains. I applied for a gun permit last month and they told me it will take up to 6 months to get the permit when law says 30 days to permit or deny my application. I am from Ohio where you can go to a gun show and pick up a gun right there. I can't buy ammo without the permit either and the price has at least doubled in the past year. It is pretty scary in downtown Elizabeth. My taxes are low because of the terminal A revenues from Newark airport go to Elizabeth, FedEx/ UPS is in in Elizabeth and we get Port Newark/Elizabeth taxes. But Jersey Gardens mall and IKEA have like a 15 year tax abatement. Now that Corzine "suspended" property tax rebates based on income which is unconstitutional. There is no end in site to the tax hikes. I drove to Philly last week and saw 14 State Police in 80 miles on the NJ Turnpike. The tolls have gone up like 25%. It costs $8 to go in NYC but the MTA/ Port Authority is raising tolls and train fares this summer.

Remind me again why I want to stay and work here or in NYC? ARGH!

I live in Jersey City and I pay $13,900/yr RE taxes on 1,400 sq. ft. Do you know how the state of New Jersey closed the most recent budget shortfall? Corzine declared a 5 year "holiday" whereby the state would stop making contributions to the state employee retirement fund. This very same retirement fund is already ILLEGALLY underfunded. This creates a situation where the actuarial probability of the state going bankrupt is near certainty. Only (even more) ruinous taxes could forestall the inevitable and only if economic growth continues in the face of such taxes. It's just a matter of time.

It's not just that but also consider the fact that many state employees are able to collect more money during their retirements than not only what they contribute but more than all the money that they earned combined during the span of their careers.

Elected state employees can hold MULTIPLE job positions AT THE SAME TIME. Please, friends of freedom, read that sentence again. It's a true statement. They get "double health benefits" too. I don't even know what that means and I'm too sickened by the whole mess to look. They've got a name for it: doubledipping. Corzine, who is as familiar with fiscal responsibility as Mr McGoo is familiar with contact lenses, even tried to ban this outrageous practice. Unfortunately, through maintenance of the poverty zones, the voting base remains dependent upon the incumbent democratic regime to keep the welfare flowing to the non-working members of my state.

It seems impossible to get ahead here.

I fail to see how the average Joe can actually live the American dream living in New Jersey. New Jersey's property tax scheme is simply reprehensible. Nobody with half a brain would want to buy a home here as the folks in Trenton will only tax you into bankruptcy.

Highway, bridge and tunnel tolls keep going up. PATH fares keep going up. Cigarette taxes keep going up. Even housing rental prices are becoming, or have become, unreasonable. Given that people are receiving less and less benefits for all the taxes they pay here, it only stands to reason that state government has become corrupt, ineffective or both.

It was a real shock moving here from New Mexico, and I plan on moving back west as soon as possible. Put simply, there's no incentive to work or live in New Jersey.

HoliSmokes! I cringed when I read you paid $7300 in taxes for 1800 sqft. I've got 15,800 sqft and the taxes are around $180. Big difference for sure but then I'm not in or near megapolis of millions of people. Come out west where land runs for ever and the sky is hugh, blue and clear.

NJ has beautiful country

Up in Sussex and Hunterdon counties. You will pay through the nose. My mom lives in Ventura, CA and has nice countryside. I grew up in Ohio and used to go hunting, shooting on my uncle's farm. I can't get my wife out of Union County. If I bring a gun into the house, she would divorce me. My dad has my guns/ ammo but I will have to trek 500 miles to get it. My dad pays about $1000/ year in taxes but has to trek an hour to Columbus to get a job. The only way I can get her to move is if I get transferred or I get her parents to move out to Amish country, PA. Until then, I have slog to Manhattan on the trains filled with Obama buttons and knit caps, live in 1920's dump that heats more outside than inside and pay $500/ month to heat it. Homeschool my child before she enters kindergarten as the dropout rate in my school system is 48%, avoid buying anything in NYC which costs 8.75% in sales tax even with Amazon and stop talking to all my colleagues about anything as they are part of the NY/NJ/ CT liberalist/ socialist/ politik.

I grew up in northern Virginia but lived about everywhere else. Over the years I've lived in many different places. IMHO there is a distinct difference between people who live east of the Mississippi and those who live west of it. Easterners don't (in general) have as clear a sense of individuality (freedom) as the westerners. This difference seems to have come about in that the east was developed from a feudal system while the west pretty much developed AFTER America declared its independence - creating two different mind-sets. So there seems to be this slight difference in mentalities - not with everyone everywhere but in general. If I were you I'd become quite serious in looking west for a new place where you can breathe and spread your elbows. We have it pretty nice where I am but then there is a lot of nice all over the west.

I would say the more correct observation is that the farther you get from the population centers, the more independent (hence, freedom minded) people tend to be.

I would hardly say that Californians are on par with Virginians just because their state is on the far side of a river!

Populated centers tend to offer more services that the 'country folk' take care of themselves. We also pay a high price for those services. Could we do without them? Sure we could. Maybe we will soon enough! But for now, the cities need care trucked in. Once those trucks stop rolling or the care shrivels up, so will the cities.

Hudson County isn't doing any better.

I live in Hudson County and, like you mentioned, it's pretty bad here too. Many tenants are being evicted from the waterfront high rises and business both large and small has come to a near standstill. Last Saturday, I walked around Jersey City and was amazed to see how lifeless the city had become.

The job market in North Jersey has become quite dismal. All the layoffs in the NYC finance sector have forced people to take positions such as cab drivers and food service employees. Software engineers are now working as office clerks or bartenders. People who still have jobs are counting their blessings right now, but are fearing for the worst. This fear compounds the negative economic effect on an already phony service-sector economy because nobody wants to eat out or buy anything not absolutely necessary for their day to day survival.

You had mentioned that you had difficulty finding work at your local A & P and that's probably because they hired someone with an MBA from Seton Hall or Princeton. Sadly, there's nothing on the horizon that suggests that anything will turn around anytime soon.

Just discussed the last paragraph with my wife...

You see, I've already been there... maybe not an MBA, but a computer career with a BS in Comp Sci. After 14 years in the industry I lost my job in 2001, just prior to 9/11. Naturally after that, there were no jobs to be had.

I started my own hardwood flooring company and never looked back. Some odd-jobs to fill in dead-time but the flooring thing has been very good to me - up till now.

So I get to keep reinventing myself every 9 - 15 years! I joke, but it's really not that funny.

Also, I wanted to point out; with the crisis we are seeing the problem we created (or allowed our gov't to create) where I can't get a job as a security guard...or a cashier... or anything else. The verticals and regulations are such that now in NJ to be a lousy security guard, you have to have SORA certification which is nothing more than $125 bucks shelled out to that gov't for the privilege of working as a security guard. The cashier jobs go to retirees and pimply faced teenagers because they know that no one that could be anywhere else would spend time in a grocery store. So they require experience! No kidding. I've filled out the applications. It's no joke. List all the education you want - if you don't know how to run a cash register on the first day, they won't hire you!

I find now that it is even more difficult to move to another vertical market without a 'buy-in'. Some license or certification is always needed to do the most menial job. Friend of mine was a assistant VP for Pru Securities before they were bought by Wachovia. He never has a job since then. He's now part-timing at Home Depot and delivering for FedEx.

I think I'm going to try to start teaching karate on the side at a local hall. I figure it this way, people aren't going to be able to afford their over-priced tae kwan do schools anymore so I'll offer a discounted price and no contracts. Who knows, I might reinvent myself properly one of these days...

I was back in Morris County, last September and could not...

believe the amount of available office space and vacant buildings and that was 6+ months ago! While there, I visited Essex County, and my home town of Orange was like a burned-out war zone. Again that was 6 months, so I can only imagine the state of affairs now. NJ is a beautiful state, but this situation is changing the entire geography and demographics everywhere, especially in a state that employs many New York workers, now unemployed with no discretionary capital. My brother is a teacher in East Hanover, and he tells me of the changes going on there. Very sad situation for the very hard working people there who struggle at the best of times to pay all of the horrible taxes and deal with the terrible traffic. Hang in there.

with us. I have a neighbor I've been trying to wake up. Ugh! Her house is paid for so she thinks she's safe, no way. Our house values just dropped but the taxes went up 5%. We live in a good area and I understand that the town is in debt and the school district and of course the state. No way will I be able to keep my home even if it is paid for. You might start a flea market in your area charge a small fee for table set ups and do it on the week ends. Good luck to you, count your blessing at times like these you will be surprised it does help.

Ask her what happens to that house she owns if she misses a tax payment. She'll see she isn't that safe after all, she may say,"that will never happen". But it should plant in her head the idea that she is a slave to the whim of government and what she thinks she owns can be stolen from her by the uniformed vote of the masses.

While you have time on your hands get to investigating alternative currencies such as open barter, IthacaHours, etc. When the FED denies our government cash we'll need something to conduct business with.

We can recreate ourselves and what we do. There is no better way to prosperity than by being creative whether in product or service development as well as in marketing. There are a lot of people out there that have jobs, have money and are looking for new products and services. Let go of the old ways and build a new future for yourselves and all of us. We've been pushing my old business model and income in inching upwards even as we see major retail businesses collapse.

The reason this particular station was targeted, IMO was because it was on the main drag off the highway past the first major intersection in Verona. The main intersection is always way too busy so they bypassed the station there and drove another few blocks to the station in question.

They might have to pay the next attendant more...or arm him (won't happen).

They've cut back everyone's hours over the past couple months to boot...I am a few weeks away from not being able to pay my mortgage or bills. Not really sure what we're gonna do, as we've got "stuff" for sale, but nobody's buying. Anybody need a Dodge diesel pickup?

I'm really not sure what you think you read or the point you were trying to make but if the "despair" in the voice of America troubles you, I would suggest stocking up on earplugs now.

I was trying to highlight the fact that the effects of the economic downturn are felt everywhere. If you're not feeling them yet, congrats. You will soon.
