Paul: Bill to tax bonuses an 'outrage' and unconstitutional
David Edwards and Rachel Oswald
Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) yet again went against the grain in Congress when he stood up in the House and argued against a proposal that would tax 90 percent of AIG executive bonuses, saying that it was a "disgrace," a "distraction" and an "outrage" that undermined the Constitution.
"I rise in opposition to this rule and the bill because of the problem -- because of the lack of need for this and the disgrace that this has brought upon us," Paul said. "Yesterday, for instance, the Federal Reserve met and they came out and they announced that they would create new money to the tune of $1.25 trillion."
Paul, a dark horse Republican candidate for president in 2008 who still enjoys considerable popularity with a base of hardcore supporters, noted that the value of the dollar went down significantly after that announcement by the Fed.

I Heard Several Congress Critters Say
That they can do "whatever they want." In other words, the Constitution is no restraint on their powers. Not only is the law a bill of attainder but it also violates the prohibition against "impariring" contracts that is also in the Constitution.

I saw this too today as I analyzed the taxation of the bonuses.
It then all became clear.
The whole thing was a ruse -- a slight of hand.
Steal the money from the people -- give it to executives (they get to keep 10%) and the rest goes toward.......*drum roll*.........."who knows" -- it's just completely gone now!!
Maybe to the Trillionairs we don't know -- Or maybe simply to pay for gov't growth to usher in the Trotsky NeoConservative End Game?
What a world what a world :)

Just a scheme
Very, very nice end play to tax the general public. Kudos to the ingenuity of government.
Lets follow the chain of events.
A stimulus package is requested by the Administration. .
Representatives of the people design a package so large and so long that no one can thoroughly investigate it in the time allowed.
A clause is added at the request of the Administration to protect the bonuses of those who have contracts for these bonuses before February 11.
The president signs it. (And reads what he signs? Or doesn't read what he signs?)
Bonuses are paid.
Public outrage turns their representatives into a frenzy of finger pointing and blame.
The President screams outrage.
More general outrage.
The president then steps forward and claims responsibility, but in a way that makes him look like a martyr for accepting blame for others, therby winning admiration from his sheep.
The bonuses are then taxed and POOF!!!! Stimulus money that is absolutely needed to save a failing business is transfered to the general tax fund to pay for other programs.
Slick. Very Slick. Other non-emergency programs get more funding And the chief instigator of the scheme comes off as a hero for saving the people from ............... uh...............himself.
And all arising from the fact that so much make believe, non-existant money had been tossed around that we would surely die if we didn't find some way to finally make that money real with borrowed money (Stimulate -Stimulus) from our children and grandchildren as well as trading off our country rather than following the advice of sounder economic thinkers and letting reality set in to adjust us back into living with what we actually produce and have to use. But damn... You can't grow government that way.
Americans sure love their kool-aid.

RP is right
The AIG bonuses are a distraction/scape-goat. Not to mention that messing with it would be the government just stepping in arbitrarily to mess with private party contracts, which is ridiculous. Covered in detail here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6lFCU_WvxU
ex post facto
This ex post facto stuff is such garbage....while I hate the idea of the bailouts, I think the Execs at AIG should appeal the constituionality of this horrible horrible horrible precedent setting legislation...all the way the SCOTUS if needs be. Rule of law must prevail over emotion!
I just don't understand
why some other congressman doesn't pick up where RP leaves off when his time expires.

It is a shame and a disgrace when Congress tries to shut down free speech and the Constitution. Our country is in peril.

One thing about it....
if congress can change the rules retroactivly at the drop of a hat, they can do it to us, too .... none of us are safe, or can depend on anything we know, or any rules we have lived by up til now. This is sorta like the credit card companies having the power to raise our interest rates or lower our credit line at their whim, thereby controlling most every financial aspect of our lives if we depend on debt AT ALL to live. Only with the credit cards, it's our own fault because we signed on the dotted line giving them all that power. If we do not speak out, as Dr. Paul has, we are in effect signing on the dotted line our implicit allowance of the notion of losing any of our liberties at the whim of Congress, or our government.
Well stated!
When the lawmakers are criminally insane, where do the people go for redress of grievances? The courts? Bought and paid for. The time is rapidly approaching where we, the people, will be left with only two options. Like Zapata said so eloquently: It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.
The
only way I see it peacefully, is getting a great crowd together and going to Washington and locking the buildings down with armed guards if necessary and sending pink slips to everyone. Then they'll get it - they work for us not themselves.

Is it wrong however to
Is it wrong however to believe that "we" should get the money back? In other words, the money as bonuses is just excess. it's not beneficial to anyone exceed those greedy for their own bonuses. I should feel outraged. We all should feel outraged because this is an unintended consequence out of "our" control.
I am sickened...
and broken hearted by what our country has become. Thanks to Dr. Paul for doing his best on behalf of the people but, it seems that he is still sitting alone in the lunch room.
"Bills of attainder, ex post
"Bills of attainder, ex post facto laws, and laws impairing the obligations of contracts, are contrary to the first principles of the social compact, and to every principle of sound legislation. ... The sober people of America are weary of the fluctuating policy which has directed the public councils. They have seen with regret and indignation that sudden changes and legislative interferences, in cases affecting personal rights, become jobs in the hands of enterprising and influential speculators, and snares to the more-industrious and less-informed part of the community." James Madison, Federalist Number 44, 1788.

Well spoken and accurate as usual, but ...
as usual the moderator could not wait for his time to expire and move on. They just can't handle the truth because they know they are all guilty of destroying our nation, eviscerating the constitution, meddling in a free market to cause it's collapse and participating in the greatest corruption and fraud the world has ever seen. The Romans and other empires pale in comparison to the levels of greed and illicit acts the present elite are guilty.

Oh, The beloved
Constitution. The same document that GAVE THEM THE POWER TO TAX US. THE POWER TO MAKE ALL THE LAWS, EVEN THE ONES THAT ENSLAVE YOU. The document was SLAVERY from the get-go. In a free system, people get to decide. No vote was ever taken on that document. A rogue group doesn't decide what's 'best" for the rest of us! The constitution was a BIG FAT LIE. We were fooled, duped, shamoozeled and had some wool pulled over our eyes. We let a rogue bunch of elitists take control.
No, Not A Lie; It Was Never A License For Everyone To Sleep
The Constitution wasn't perfect, but it came pretty close. One could argue that it should have prohibited government debt.
The original Constitution did not permit an income tax. It was subsequently amended, thanks to much apathy.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. The bankers, the fascists, the collectivists, et al, could disappear overnight, and new ones would appear. One can never rest in the eternal struggle against tyranny and theft.

Actually...
I agree with you 100% that it was not a license to go to sleep. That is pretty much what it spelled out too. :) The first ten amendments basically spelled out the ways in which we should be ever vigilant. They responsibilities as much as they are rights. Which has been said before, but I thought would add nicely here to what you already told us.
Jefferson and others after all, in not so many words, agreed that humans in their present state are the most evil of sentient beings. We'll get better though :).
Good stuff! Balance is coming!
Right on...
Everyone who deals in dollars just lost 5% of their purchasing power and those idiots are arguing over $165 million. Disgraceful that they do it and we put up with it.

God bless and protect Ron Paul!
If we were in the time of our Founding Fathers, Ron Paul would be one of them.
He is right up there with Thomas Paine. It is an honor to say that we have been directly inspired by this patriot from Texas.
He and we are running out of time.
I knew this was wrong
leave it to Ron to give them an a$$ chewing about it ;)
We need many more like Ron Paul.
The DP is proof that the grassroots support for Ron Paul and his peaceful message of individual liberty is large, real, and not going away!
I just sent this to Drudge, this and HR1207 needs to be aired
Thank you Dr. Paul for making me act on what I already knew was right.
