Why isn't C4L running ads in Mel Watt's District?

This is what Wikipedia says about Mel Watt's district.

"The district was re-established after the 1990 United States Census, when North Carolina gained a district. It was drawn in 1992[1] as a 64 percent black majority district stretching from Gastonia to Durham. It was very long and so thin at some points that it was no wider than a highway lane, as it followed Interstate 85 almost exactly,[2][3] and was criticized as a gerrymandered district. The Wall Street Journal called the district "political pornography." The United States Supreme Court ruled in Shaw v. Reno, 509 U.S. 630 (1993) that a racial gerrymander may, in some circumstances, violate the Equal Protection Clause.[4] Subsequently, the district was redrawn several times and was adjudicated in the Supreme Court on two further occasions. [5] The current version has a small plurality of whites."

Watt can't count on his racist buddies to re-elect him. We need a candidate or, at least, an anti-Watt message to put the heat on him.
We need to point out that 309 Members of Congress DID NOT cosponsor his watered-down version of HR 1207.

In order to prevent immediate disclosure of secure financial information that could potentially disrupt financial markets, it was proposed that a short time-lag of a few months be allowed for certain sensitive information. I am pleased to know that this proposal will accomplish the goals of H.R. 1207, while protecting the security of our nation's monetary and fiscal policy.

On February 26, 2009, this bill was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services for further consideration. On September 26, the Committee on Financial Services held a hearing on H.R. 1207. On October 6, I became a cosponsor of H.R. 1207.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Federal Reserve. I share your concerns regarding the need for transparency in our country's fiscal and monetary policy.

I support the stated intent of legislation Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) introduced to audit the Federal Reserve (H.R. 1207), but I am concerned with the specifics of the bill in its current form. On September 25, 2009, the House Committee on Financial Services held a hearing to consider H.R. 1207. After this hearing I was assured by both the Chairman and Ranking member of the Committee that they are working to authorize a GAO audit of the Federal Reserve, accomplishing the goals laid out by Rep. Paul's legislation. The legislation will likely be included in a broader financial regulatory reform bill currently under consideration.

I talked to Rep. Paul regarding H.R. 1207 and he is in agreement with the Committees proposal to include his bill in up-coming legislation. In order to prevent immediate disclosure of secure financial information that could potentially disrupt financial markets, it was proposed that a short time-lag of a few months be allowed for certain sensitive information. I am pleased to know that this proposal will accomplish the goals of H.R. 1207, while protecting the security of our nation's monetary and fiscal policy.

Please know that I will continue to work with the Chairman and Ranking member of the Financial Services Committee, as well as Rep. Paul to help bring meaningful and effective change to the Federal Reserve and our financial system as a whole.

H.R. 1207, the bill in Congress calling for an audit of the Federal Reserve System (that would also likely result in an audit of the U.S. government’s gold holdings) is under current consideration in the House Financial Services Committee. Hearings began last month. With over 300 co-sponsors of this bill and of the Senate’s companion bill S. 604 (over 75 percent of all members of Congress), there would be reasonable prospects of enactment.

A couple of months ago, the Fed hired a government-relations lobbyist to combat H.R.1207. Various Fed officials have tried to intimidate Congress and the public by stating that enactment of this legislation would result in higher interest rates, higher consumer prices and a falling value of the U.S. dollar. None of these threats seemed to have stopped H.R. 1207 from moving along.

On Oct. 20, a new tactic to combat H.R. 1207 was implemented. Senators Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Bob Corker R-Tenn., introduced S. 1803, the Federal Reserve Accountability Act. This alternative bill pretty much guts any attempt at Federal Reserve accountability by allowing only limited audits of the Troubled Asset Relief Program and similar high profile bailouts. Tom LaMar ; Is this site going to update it's information as to the hearing that HR1207 received in the house, at the behest of Barney Frank no less? I am receiving updates from the house, as can all of us can just by signing up at the house site. There has been no further action on the bill since it's 3-hour hearing, but it is definitely worth listening to.

Help!! Congressman Elijah Cummings MD-7

I called the Congressman's office and was informed that he would not be supporting HR 1207 but supports HR 2424 which is a bill introduced late in the game by Dennis Kulinich of Ohio and only has 5 supporters (1 of which is Mr. Paul). I asked the "Politicians" secretary why he could not support both bills just as Mr. Paul has and did not get a response. I am a relatively young Black Democrat from Baltimore City who will not rest until something gets done about the Fed. What can I do next?

Visit your Rep's office in person and ask to speak with a staffer. Explain the benefits of transparency and politely ask for support of the bill.

You have a name, an address and a district..That's it, if you defer to a party moniker you are eliminated. The only title we will accept is American, the Constitution doesn't recognize any other. As such your ordered to do what is in the best interest of the people regardless of moniker. If you cannot do this then pack your bags.

Another technique, if you live within reasonable driving or Amtrak range of Washington and you can spare a day off work, is to show up with a group of well-dressed, like-minded people at the Committee’s front office (2129 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515) and have your most eloquent group member tell the receptionist that you would like to speak with one of the above staff, or anyone who is available, regarding H.R. 1207.

The Committee Democrats have over 50 staff, so there is absolutely no reason why you cannot speak to someone other than a 22-year old receptionist. Be politely insistent and try not to leave empty-handed unless threatened with eviction or arrest.

You can also contact Committee members directly, asking them to talk to Barney Frank about H.R. 1207. By “members”, I mean other Congressmen on the Committee, and specifically on its most relevant subcommittees, which would have co-jurisdiction over the legislation.

These would likely be the Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology (of which Ron Paul is the minority ranking member), the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, and possibly the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises as well.

Hopefully, many of your readers will find their own Congressman on this list, or failing that, a Congressman from a neighboring district or at least the same state. (Again, there is no use in contacting a Congressman with whom you have no connection, and who owes you nothing).

Given there is strength in numbers, it would be particularly effective to arrange for multiple constituents to jointly contact the same Congressman on this issue, whether in the form of a petition/letter or, if possible, through an in-person meeting with him or his staff. Any petitions/letters should include a copy of the Text of H.R. 1207: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009 and a clear, concise request for the Congressman, as a Committee member, to insist on movement of the complete and unadulterated bill to Chairman Frank, ASAP.

Of course, you also want to ensure that your Congressman is signed on to the bill as a cosponsor . To see cosponsors, go to Govtrack Audit The Fed then click on “show cosponsors”. It is particularly important to have as many members of the above subcommittees, especially Democrats, signed on to this legislation as possible).

Moreover, anyone who has in the past donated money or volunteered for their Congressman's campaign, should not hesitate to play the quid-pro-quo card at this time. Make them work for you!

I had the same experience

This happened to me too.. I emailed Driehaus a few months ago, and it took him about a month to respond. In his response he said he wouldn't support the bill because it undermined the independence of the Fed... ha.. funny how things change
