Which silver ounce coin is the best Investment?

I have been interested in buying silver bullion coins lately. I would invest in gold coins, but I don't have that much money. Thus far I have bought 3 different one-ounce coins from 3 different countries. I want to pick one to invest in long-term but I am not sure which to pick.

I have a Canadian Silver Maple Leaf:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...

I also have the American Silver Dollar
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...

And I have one Mexican Silver Libertad:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...

The Mexican Libertad is the cheapest in terms of american dollars as of today. (I can buy them from my local store at about 3 dollars less than the other two)

It is my impression that the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has the finest purity.

My main question is, 4 years from now when bread is worth 50,000 American Dollars, what coins do you think would be most excepted in stores across the US?

I personally live in Texas, so I am inclined to think the Mexican Libertad might hold some weight here in the future, but the Silver Maple Leaf is certainly pretty.

Please post your thoughts on which coin you think Is the best investment.

for a loaf of bread? small but definitley not "junk" coins

id strongly recommend buying a stockpile of silver dimes, quarters, and halfs, pre 1965 of course. As far as the one ounce coins go, its true that the Canadian Maple Leafs have the highest purity- .9999 however, its considered a better investment by some, to buy .999 one troy ounce silver bars for their purity and simple design which usually makes the silver cheaper for you because you dont have to pay for the stamping of the coin. check out this website.

Why go here for advise

there are many places to search on the web for your silver collection and or long term investments. Some of these clucks act like wise investors and will give you misguided information. look at the replies, one guy is calling silver a stupid choice. What a freak!!! This person asked for a simple request as to what type of silver coin to buy, not your freaking opinion of why not to buy silver.

Silver rounds have the advantage of the same silver....

content as country-minted coins, without having to pay for the name of the country.
If you want the value of silver without the markup, consider plain silver rounds. They are very acceptable, something that you would use first to buy what you need. Save your good coins for absolute emergency use or to pass down to the kids.

Although Bernanke has

Although Bernanke has probably doubled the amount of money it is not clear that it is all in circulation or ever will be.

If the money created by fiat remains in banks and never finds its way into circulation there will simply be no "inflation" effect.

What is happening is that unemployment is escalating and is likely to be with us for some time. That will reduce purchasing by consumers who are all cutting back. That will affect sales and result in more layoffs by affected companies.

People are refinancing their mortgages as rates are low and will continue to pay them down. Housing bubble is deflating and there is a glut of unsold houses, especially foreclosed properties many of which are being vandalized further lowering value of existing homes.

Much of the money Bernanke created might just sit in banks as demand for loans for new businesses is anemic. As much as Obama wants people to spend and buy it is just not happening. So despite the creation of additonal currency we might not see inflation for a long time as deflation is the order of the day.

The good thing about depressions and recessions is that prices do go down, not just for housing but for anything. This helps one get through especially if one got laid off and is unemployed. The last thing we need is an inflationary depression where prices go up just when unemployment is high.

Bernanke and his supporters such as Barney Frank claim that before inflation rears its ugly head Bernanke will withdraw funds from circulation to avoid inflation. There may be no need if demand for loans does not materialize and the new money remains out of circulation.

I am not looking forwards to an inflation nor a hyperinflation ala Zimbabwe or the Weimar Republic. I am not an economist and have no crystal ball. I have no idea whether things will pan out as I suggest above. Peter Schiff keeps saying that we will have a severe inflation if not a hyperinflation and I have bought some shares of mining companies which tend to move fifty percent further than bullion and are less expensive. So I sleep nights and have postponed retirement indefinitely. Fortunately I enjoy my challenging work.

Pays to shop around to find the lowest premium markup for commodities. Some dealers want 10% or more while there are some with lower range 1 to 3 % depending on volume of purchase.

With the idea that banks

With the idea that banks will continue to sit on the money and not circulate it so that there is no price inflation...I'm not so sure? If banks make money by lending- and they pay interest for deposits- wouldn't they stand to lose money by continuing to pay interest on the deposits but not earning any profit since they aren't lending?

don't rule out the "junk"

morgan silver dollars. they are a pretty good value for the metal. but because they were circulated, their numismatic value can drop. they are beat up, but from what i understand, they were one of the most widely circulated coins at the time. they are beat up, giving them the "junk" status, but i love em.

Silver dollars

"Junk" generally applies to dimes, quarters, and halves.

Silver dollars were not all that widely circulated. I was there. When I was paid a silver dollar, it was usually some prize or gift. The four silver dollars I have now is probably the most I've owned in my life.

At my dad's filling station, it was unusual to have a silver dollar in the cash register. A silver dollar contained a full dollar's worth of fine silver. Silver dimes, quarters, and halves contained slightly less in proportion. Furthermore, a dollar was a lot more money then.

I'm betting that by, "at the time"...

...sawx75 was meaning back when Morgan silver dollars were still being produced, 1878 -1904 (not counting 1921). Were you really around in 1904? :-)

Gold and sivler are at an all time high....lousy time to buy

suck it up people, you, like the vast majority of people, missed the boat

all they are doing now is trying to pump up the price just a bit more before they sell

study the history of metal performance...it is lousy.

Only until 9/11, did metal prices go up. All that growth is based on fear. As soon as the fear dies, the prices and growth of any fear-based investment will decrease dramatically. The latest fear is the fear of economic disaster, but the initial impact of that fear is over. We are well into the recession now...way too late to buy.

To me, it is sick for people to try to profit off of fear.

Not only do they profit from fear, they manufacture fear just to keep tricking people out of money. Remember Y2K? It was all manufactured.

The next wave of fear is the 2012 bullshit.

Don't fall for it people.

Look at a chart of gold prices since 1971...

It was around $45/oz and has gone to $900 today.

This is due to our cutting ties to gold in 1971.

It is best to "dollar cost average" your way into gold and silver.

Buy a little each week or month as you can afford it.

Wrong Answer

Gold and Silver are money insurance. Do you have health, house, car insurance? Everyone should own some Gold and Silver to protect their purchasing power in the case of a financial crisis. It really doesn't make any sense not to own some. Good luck.

Junk silver

Why specify one ounce? Junk silver (pre-1965 US dimes, quarters, and halves) may give the best bang for the Fed-buck. They are universally recognized and they are durable. They are also not too big for small purchases. Old silver dollars are often priced with too much numismatic value.

I've got some Silver Eagles also that I picked up on sale a few months back. Shop around.

Stay clear of anything that is not a widely recognized brand name.

Libertad

R3ovlUTION charles walker 8322474577 I like the mexican libertad. Produced by Mr. Salinas the Ron Paul of Mexico. He owns television station Azteca, Electra Corp. and Bank Azteca. We do not have freedom to have an Bank Azteca bank in the US but they are all over Central America. It is the only place left were US citizens can have a silver account without a Social Sec. number and IRS snooping. The libertad is is the only goverment authorized competing currency in the world.

The US silver Eagle for

The US silver Eagle for sure. It is known around the world and accepted as genuine .999 silver. Plain rounds are not as good because most people can't verify the .999 Ag.

Plus, look at prices right now, the Silver eagle is going for $7 over spot.

I would stick with the eagle or the maple leaf myself.

I am liquidating some silver right now and I am holding onto my Silver eagles and selling the rounds, bars and junk silver.

The Silver Round!

I bought a couple Christmas and football silver rounds for $14 a piece last week.

Any silver coin or round will be accepted.

In a hyper-inflationary situation somebody's not going to turn down a silver coin or round because it doesn't say the right thing on it.

The important thing to understand is that its not the logo on the silver that gives it its value, its the silver itself. It won't matter if the silver is US minted or Australian or Canadian or whatever, as long as its silver people will want it.

Right now the imprtant question is: what legitimate silver coins/rounds can you get for the cheapest?

There are US Silver Eagles:
http://www.govmint.com/se...

starting at $24.95

AOCS approved currencies like Lakota Dollar or NeoCoin:
http://www.opencurrency.c...

Which as a Currency Officer I can get for $6.25 over spot price.

Then there's Liberty Dollar with their new Bullion Pricing, which is available for everyone with "free and immediate" shipping:
http://libertydollar.org/...

Great Prices!!

I am also a Regional Currency Officer for Liberty Dollar and right now I am out of stock but if anyone is interested in participating in a bulk order everyone who throws in will most likely benefit from even lower prices.

Just a thought!

Big Assumption

What if your assumption about where prices are heading is wrong? If you believe bread may go to $50k over the next four years you might want to at least check out an opposing viewpoint so you can make a better informed decision regarding the merits of buying silver right now as an inflation hedge:
http://www.safehaven.com/...

In the event of a

In the event of a crash...

Silver is silver is silver.

Go generic.

However, if there isn't a crash, then you are getting into numeristics (date, quality of the round, quantity minted, etc...)

Some people typically pay more for Government and foreign coins. The Silver Eagle, Philharmonic, Panda's and other sell for slightly more and therefore I could sell those rounds for more.

But like I said, at the end of the day. It's all just silver.

The US Mint eagles are

The US Mint eagles are protected from counterfeiting, just as paper money counterfeiting is investigated and prosecuted by the government.

While other coin manufacturers sell cheaper, their coins don't have the government counterfeiting protection and they aren't legal tender.

Great Advice!

I already have quite a bit of 90% US silver coins. I have Silver Half-Dollars, Silver quarters and Silver dimes. But i've been wanting to get more ounces.

Thanks takeaction for explaining to me why premiums aren't worth it.
I would try to buy silver online, but I have cut myself off from bank accounts and credit cards, so purchasing online is no longer a convenience. Not that big of a problem though, I have a great local coin shop.

Most online retailers accept

Most online retailers accept money order. All of my APMEX orders are paid with money order sent via snail mail. Takes about 2 weeks for me to send payment and receive the order.

look on

Ebay...and this will give you the best price. You and I know where to buy these coins.....and then sell them on Ebay if needed. To me.....Ebay, is the best gauge on what Silver is going for.

Me personally.....I don't care. I want silver as close to spot as I can get it.

Buffalo rounds, 10 & 100 oz bars.....etc. As the price of Silver goes up...the Premiums go down. This is hard for new silver buyers to understand.

Example.....

Right now. You can buy American Eagles for about $4.00 over spot. The fact is this.....as the price of silver goes up, the premiums go down. If the price of silver goes down, the premiums go up.

This is my educated guess chart (From past history)....on American Eagles....

Spot Silver--------------Premium you will pay-----Total Cost
$12.77------------------- +$4.00------------------------$16.77
$15.00--------------------+$2.00------------------------$17.00
$20.00--------------------+$1.00------------------------$21.00

So do you see this game? In my opinion, you are out of your mind to buy American Eagles right now. As the price goes up....the Premium that people are willing to pay goes down.

So the goal would be in my opinion...to buy what ever silver you can as close to spot as possible. Then you reap the rewards. If you try buying Eagles, Maple Leafs, Libertads, you will not get the profit you are due.

I hope this makes sense.

NOTE...I have bought all of my metals from www.apmex.com

I bought some from www.bulliondirect.com and got the worst service and delays ever.

apmex.com routinely has

apmex.com routinely has silver for $0.99 per ounce over spot. Plus $9.95 shipping for anything under (around) 20 ounces.

Lately, I've found better deals from APMEX than I have found from ebay.

Right now, 10oz Heraeus silver bar is $153.75 with shipping from APMEX
http://www.apmex.com/Prod...

And now that I'm looking.. 10oz of silver is going for roughly the same amount on ebay.
http://coins.shop.ebay.co...

Go with 90% US Silver

If you are looking for something to use for money in the future, why not use something that was money in the past? 90% US Silver dimes, quarters, and halves minted up through 1964. These are currently selling for about 11 times face value for larger quantities.

Freedom, Prosperity and Peace

Assuming 11 times value,

Assuming 11 times value, you're looking at $13.68 per ounce of 90% silver. A coin such as the eagle or maple costs a lot more than the 10% difference in silver content.

Any idea why the spread on silver is so much higher than it is for gold? I called several dealers in BC and Washington state and none had a satisfactory answer.

Best choice of silver coinage

I would suggest either US Silver Eagles or Canadian Silver Mapleleafs. They both are one ounce pure silver and priced only a couple of dollars more than the market price for one ounce of silver bullion. Kept in uncirculated or proof condition, they should increase in value as collectors' items over the years.

I am not so enthused about collecting used old silver coins. Their price at purchase represents both their silver ingredient and their rarity and condition as collectors' items. As such they will probably be seriously overpriced in terms of silver and their appreciation as investments will depend on the whims of collectors.

I positively advise against "unofficial coinage" such as the NORFED Liberty Dollars or the Lakota Bank silver wampum. Although they claim to be one ounce pure silver, there is no such legal guarantee of this as exists for coins minted by the US or Canadian governments. These are already priced well above the Silver Eagles and Silver Mapleleafs of equal weight and purity, so the possibility of actually turning a profit by investing in them is nil. More likely, they will turn into a serious loss.
