Churchgoers More Likely to Back Torture

April 30, 2009

Survey: Support for terror suspect torture differs among the faithful

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new survey.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week -- 54 percent -- said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is "often" or "sometimes" justified. Only 42 percent of people who "seldom or never" go to services agreed, according to the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified -- more than six in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only four in 10 of them did.

The analysis is based on a Pew Research Center survey of 742 American adults conducted April 14-21. It did not include analysis of groups other than white evangelicals, white non-Hispanic Catholics, white mainline Protestants and the religiously unaffiliated, because the sample size was too small.

Polling

Is the biggest public sheep herder there is.

They prey on the public's desire to be "part of a group", much like the 2 party system that makes them vote for the "winner".

It's mind propaganda.

742 -- That's the reliable statistical number

Since when do DailyPaulers not understand the difference between CNN Poll or a Fox Poll; oh, wait there is no difference.

Wow! 742 -- all from Slow-Poke County right -- Where Uncle-Daddy gets to poll twice?

Octobox

"Church-goer" is not the same thing as "Christian" of course.

I'm neither of the above. I tend to judge people by the way they behave. Actions speak so much louder than words.

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." - Benito Mussolini.

"Armed robber him need gun. Authority man him need pen.
Authority man in charge of money. Him no need gun, him need pen. Pen got power gun no get. If gun steal eighty thousand naira. Pen go steal two billion naira." - Fela Kuti

Ironic

many smart Ron Paul supporters dismissed polls last year that Dr. Paul would be polling at only 0,5 % or 1% etc, and thus kceptical of polling, but now we want to believe a CNN (Pew) poll uncritically
Also, you have (intentionally?) omitted this important part of the short CNN part on this:
"The religious group most likely to say torture is never justified was Protestant denominations -- such as Episcopalians, Lutherans and Presbyterians -- categorized as "mainline" Protestants, in contrast to evangelicals".

As to myself, I have opposed the Iraq war from the beginning and consistently ever mainly based on religious reasons. Eeven if the president would be able to constitutionally declare war himself, I would have been against it. As Dr. Paul has said, the notion of "pre-emptive war" is totally the opposite of the christian tradition and in the New Testament.

As to the "evangelicals" that would believe it, we should simply convince them, not reject them.
The doctrinaire neocons. like Kristol, Frum, Wolfowitz etc. that would all approve of torture, are mostly atheists or agnostics.

Torture is most definitely NOT part of the Christian tradition, Prof. De la Paz. Since when do you profess to be a church historian? As a matter of fact, early Christians and through the centuries have been the object of torture! I can cite countless examples and proof of this. The big wars in this world under Stalin, Mao etc. have been committed by atheists. Of course there has been murder by people who call themselves christians, also suicide etc. This is called sin. If you become a christian, it does not mean you do never sin anymore, but your attitude towards sin changes radically, e.g. you recognize it as a sin , ask for forgiveness and see what you can do to do good deeds.

I worked for a polling company

I thought I would be doing something useful that helped people be able to get their voice heard. I quit after the first week. I could not live with myself asking people questions that were twisted to get a certain results wanted by the group paying for the poll, and I had worked telemarketing before that and had not felt as slimy.

Many of the people who would take the poll did not know what they were talking about and would even contradict themselves. Depending on how the question was asked you could get people to say they supported both sides on abortion. One question they would say they were pro life and 3 questions later they would say they were pro choice.

The best example is parasite pollster Frank Luntz. If you are offended by the F word you should still watch this video.

If I wanted to read steaming piles of festering bullshit

based on corporate police-state, false left/right-gay/straight-black/white, people-dividing propaganda veiled by some ridiculously biased survey conducted on the mentally ill....

I would go to CNN.com, not this site. GET IT! Thank you.

Then again, the evangelical church, by failing to even superficially teach biblical doctrine, has practically cattle-prodded an entire generation into the slaughterhouse of blind, government-trusting consumerism. Atheists are no better. The state has been your messiah for some time now. Heck, they even convinced you that it was socially acceptable and even "sexy" for you to execute your young.

"This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave."

Exactly. Most (around 80+%)

Exactly. Most (around 80+%) of the people who claim to be Christian don't even believe the basic tenets of Christianity when they are asked pointed questions about it. They give real Christians a bad name.

"The prolific pollster George Barna just released another startling survey: among America's professing "born-again" Christians, only 19% possess a Biblical worldview. That's right. Some 80% of professing Christians do not possess a Biblical worldview." --> http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/baldwin/090331

Christianity is not just changing ones mind to believe a certain thing, like all the other religions of the world. It is a supernatural work of God whereby He changes a person's very nature, character, and desires. Real Christians may even be deceived by corporate media just like the general public, but this is far less likely to happen since generally true Christians are often more discerning than the fake fair-weather Christians. One reason is that true Christianity requires constant introspection, while the fake prolific Christianity just has people going to church to feel good about themselves and have a party. These types of people are generally comfortable with their lives and don't examine things in their lives as a matter of course.

It's the fox news/limbaugh/hannity crowd

They believe whatever these news organizations tell them... without question. It's actually quite frightening.

So much for loving your

So much for loving your enemy.

Besides myself, I know one

Besides myself, I know another born-again Jesus loving Christian who opposes torture. Dr. Ron Paul. :)

Actually, I know of no Christians who support torture.

To paraphrase Ghandi..

I like your Christ but your Christians Suck...

What a den of vipers and hypocrites.

"Yeah well....torture's a small issue."

-quote from the minister of a church we stopped going to (as soon as he said that.)

The Christians I am friends with mostly all support the wars. And you can't interest them in a discussion of torture. They think we are "helping" over in Iraq.

Totally brainwashed and very sad. If only the churches took a stand. But I guess the 501 (c) 3 issue keeps them gagged and acting like it's a virtue to "stay out of it."

Ha

Of course the unspoken assumption is that it will be Muslims who are being tortured. I would suggest that the demographic that has been singled out for this survey is exactly that demographic that has bought into the Islamo-fascist world conquest propaganda.

A lot of brainwashing going on

First, I would question anything that CNN puts out. I mean, really.

Second, I am not really surprised at the results but extremely disappointed. The problem is that they believe strongly in the government's version of 9/11. They believe so strongly in it that they advocate that torture for these creeps is totally ok, considering what they did. But, it all comes back to their listening to too much MSM and not doing their homework.

They listen to their pastors too much instead of studying their Bibles and praying to hear the word of God. They mindlessly follow these leaders. They will eventually lead them off the cliff and Jesus said if it were possible, even the elect would be deceived. We are living in those times.

Well this is one regular

Well this is one regular church-goer who opposes torture.

Hey another great article

Hey another great article from the Communist News Network

"I love the Union and the Constitution, but I would rather leave the Union with the Constitution than remain in the Union without it." - Jefferson Davis

This is not necessarily in the vein of this thread but

torture does play a part.

Has anyone (especially if you are a Christian) seen the film Dogville with Nicole Kidman, Lauren Bacall, James Caan, John Hurt, etc.,? If you’ve seen it, I’d like to know what you thought of it.

For those who haven't seen the film, it's a very hard film to "get into & stick with" and is done in "play" form. But once you get to a certain point in the story and understand what's going on, expecially who the main character represents, I'm sure you will find it a very thought-provoking film and I'd like to know your thoughts.

No Surprise

Sheep have always bleeted in favor of taking down the rams. It is perfectly consistent with the traditions of christendom.

Sic Semper Tyrannis

torture is okay for you , just say a couple hail mary's

But don't forget to drop a few bucks in the box on your way out .

This is because

the Churches and their clergy have been compromised for many years, and they are working to control their congregations, hand in hand with the NWO.
Most independent Christians have known this for years.
Never attend a church with a 501-C3 corporate tax exempt status.

501-c3

I disagree simply because most pastors just dont know what they are signing up for, and cla tells them to do it so they just do it without study.

I know for a fact my church has 501-c3 but the pastor often denounces both republicans and democrats. And the average sunday night crowd and midweek service crowed is 1500.

Furthermore any christian that has read foxes book of martyrs or trail of blood can not support torture.

Jesus is cool but . . .

Jesus is really cool but many of his "followers" . . . not so much.

Hugh...gggg

You are so cool, and certainly your followers are too!

I love it!!!

Jesus is cool, but his followers...not so much.

Didn't John Lennon say exactly that?

"Jesus was allright, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. "
--John Lennon

wow, they are going to really crappy churches

The forces of dark have a MAJOR interest in controlling worship, just know that folks.

So, how do the people who maintain that morality comes from religion explain this?

I find that a little

I find that a little unsettling. Have these people completely missed the fundamental teachings of Christ?
