Watch out for H.R. 1966 - Causing someone "emotional stress" online could send you to jail for two years
Submitted by pencils2 on Wed, 05/06/2009 - 10:40
H.R. 1966, the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act, is an incredibly dangerous bill. From its own language:
Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
Sound like something good for the government to be involved in? I think not.

Why only "cyberbullying"?
Why don't they haul real school bullies off the playground and stick them in jail for two years? Why don't they go into bars and round up the people who are arguing and possibly endangering the feelings of others? Why don't they put listening devices in all homes and public places to catch all the people who hurt each other's feelings? I mean, if they're going to do it, why not go all the way?
Good news is, if this passes, we can sue the government for scaring us.
How do you like that?
Your government, law enforcement, bankers, anyone can harrass or intimidate you, and it's all legal. You respond and get prosecuted.
I do agree with one thing. Never threaten unless you are prepared to follow through and for whatever consequences may arise as a result of your response.
Absolutely right
Resisting this law does not mean we disagree with the problems of cyberbullying or internet intimidation. What we disagree with is giving that jurisdiction to the federal government on extremely vague terms. Let parents and communities monitor these things, there are plenty of computer programs and tips for increasing safety for children online.

What's in a name?
Have you ever noticed that all of the crazy laws are named after some girl named "Megan"?
What the heck's that all about?
Megan Meier
Megan was the victim of a terrible prank from a daughter and a mother who created a fake account. She ended up committing suicide because of the bullying. It is a tragic situation, but does not provide a legitimate reason for the federal government to start regulating "emotional stress" online. These things must be dealt with and regulated with parents and locally, not the federal government.

She was already taking psychological medicine
when she killed herself. Some blame should fall on the drug companies.
The little emails and
The little emails and letters that demand one fill out a tax ID form for "withholding" purposes or 1099 reporting purposes always cause me stress because I know they are illegal and are used to put pressure on (stress) the so-called taxpayer (already under stress, fear adn intimidation). Every corporation in America would get sued over and over until and unless they began following the real law.
hmmm, maybe this so-called anti-bullying act would be a good thing???
Seems like the Bad Guys can't get much of anything right these days....

I don't know about you but I 'feel' the Federal Reserve Act,
The Income Tax Act, The Federal Department of Education, The National Security Act, The War Commissions Act, The Patriot Act, the PNAC, The Council on Foreign Relations, the Tri-Lateral Commission, the Bilderbergs, The Brookings Institute (think tank), the American Enterprise Institute (think tank), are 'guilty' of coercion, intimidation, harassment and the main cause of substantial emotional distress to all citizens!

Considering
How the simple term "enemy combatants" used to try eight German soldiers in WWII has turned into an act of incredible executive power against the citizens with the Patriot Act, "emotional stress" may even be far more dangerous in the long run.
