Shhhh. Newspaper Publishers Are Quietly Holding a Very, Very Important Conclave Today. Will You Soon Be Paying for Online Content
Here's a story the newspaper industry's upper echelon apparently kept from its anxious newsrooms: A discreet Thursday meeting in Chicago about their future.
"Models to Monetize Content" is the subject of a gathering at a hotel which is actually located in drab and sterile suburban Rosemont, Illinois; slabs of concrete, exhibition halls and mostly chain restaurants, whose prime reason for being is O'Hare International Airport. It's perfect for quickie, in-and-out conclaves.
There's no mention on its website but the Newspaper Association of America, the industry trade group, has assembled top executives of the New York Times, Gannett, E. W. Scripps, Advance Publications, McClatchy, Hearst Newspapers, MediaNews Group, the Associated Press, Philadelphia Media Holdings, Lee Enterprises and Freedom Communication Inc., among more than two dozen in all. A longtime industry chum, consultant Barbara Cohen, "will facilitate the meeting."
The stark reality is that the industry will have to soon start demanding payment for at least some of its online handiwork.
Ultimately, many in attendance will start charging for some online content because they don't know what else to do.
If one believes that newspapers are critical to democracy, one must wish the best to those attending the Thursday meeting. It's sort of like the auto industry: those guys in Detroit screwed things up something fierce but I do hope those companies succeed. In this case, I hope the newspaper honchos, and minions back home, devise new "models to monetize content" and marry them to sophisticated, high-quality editorial visions.
It's hard to believe but, who knows, maybe history will one day recall an important meeting in godawful Rosemont. As my "Star Wars"-obsessed five-year-old son might say, may the Force be with you.

The Pay-Per-Lie business model will not work. If I want to be
lied to I'll watch broadcast TV for free.
Thomas Jefferson once said, "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground."
Well, I guess he called that one.
A Republic, If You Can Keep It
4th dimension = add time to
4th dimension = add time to the equation
Think about a fully controlled internet where only cyber czar approved sites are allowed. Then comes the monetization.
I dont' know, that's just spec. I'm confused too why anyone wants to pay for disinfo.
web: That would be the worst case scenario.
At that point, it would not matter. We would be robots.
Confused
I am not getting it. Let them charge for there lies. Who would pay?
Are they not in trouble b/c we don’t read the crap they put out???????
I would believe that they are critical to democracy if there was truth and real reporting being done.
What am I missing????
If Internet 2 becomes a reality, the real news web sites would..
be filtered out. The only choices would be theirs.
They want to stop all of the real news and leave all of their crap and charge us to read it!
I think it's funny
that they think they can charge a fee for their "articles" that people don't even want to read for free.
If they can't give it away, who do they think it going to pay money for it?
It's a joke.
They are going out of business, and they deserve it.
Also, have you noticed that
Also, have you noticed that pretty much all of the mainline online newspapers require registration before you are allowed to comment, then those comments are moderated and you never see them? So, it will fall by mandate of the cyber czar that online news sites regulate themselves or face fines by the czar.
web: Your comments are hitting home here.
They are filtering the 1st Amendment. They decide the same way newspapers decide what letters to the editor are published. They select their truth and bury the rest.
Somehow, this must tie into
Somehow, this must tie into the cyber czar thingy. The czar will act like the FCC, you will have to apply for a permit from the cyber czar just to run a website, that sort of thing. That's my take. These greedy and outmoded newspapers are trying to hold onto their influence, and I'm guessing they are getting assurances at the top that they will clamp down the internet, so that it is similar to shutting down cable access on tv, shutting down micro fm's on the air, things like that. Then, the greedy corporate cess pool can monetize the internet and fully bastardize the once great interwebs.
I agree. It appears they are
I agree. It appears they are going to attempt to silence the spread of information regarding their objectives with a bureaucracy. The internet as we know it may well be in it's death throes, but people care more about sports, television and celebrities too notice. How pathetic. We're being criminalized as we speak.

In case you've never seen journalism, maybe you can tune into the Telegraphs expose' of UK Government corruption. Quite riveting.

The beauty of the internet
You can always find ways to go around it
Where is the love?

I read somewhere that the
I read somewhere that the internet see censorship as a fault, and route around it. Therefore, it makes sense that they will try and legislate control of the internet next.

These deadbeats are going to
These deadbeats are going to charge because they can't figure out what else to do....what about producing real, factual, and relevant news? What about hiring quality reporters of many different persuasions? How about returning to the standard that reporters report without coloring the story with personal politics? How about investigative journalism that checks the integrity of government and big business? How about not manufacturing news? No no no, of course not.
This could get ugly. I hope
This could get ugly. I hope this is the event that wakes the American people us to the fact that their country is being transformed. But if most people cannot even understand that most of the "news" is controlled and "approved" for them before it's printed, then, probably, all hope is lost.

More secret meetings that we are not invited to with the .....
future of the 1st Amendment as the topic of discussion.
