Ron Paul: I'm Not Bailing Out California

Ron Paul: I'm Not Bailing Out California

The sorry state of California faces a $20+ billion deficit, and all the talk is whether the state falls into the category of too big to fail, and Washington should throw it a bone, or two billion. I think we know whose vote the state not getting: Writing in the New York Times' Room for Debate, former presidential hopeful Ron Paul comes down firmly (and unsurprisingly) in the tough love category. As he puts it: "If you live beyond your means, you'll one day have to live beneath your means." Sage words, Mr. Paul. So what do we do, instead?

Here's Paul:

Instead of seeking federal aid, California should cut spending, rethink some of its unsustainable public pension programs, tame down the expensive and failed drug war, and repeal regulations that discourage economic growth. According to a 2008 piece by The Independent Institute's William Shughart, the state owns more than 20,000 buildings and 6.7 million acres of land, a portion of which is "surplus" property that could be sold to private owners.

It is worth unpacking this a little. What exactly does "cut spending" mean? For states, remember, it almost always starts with schools and social services. Indeed, in Gov. Arnold's plan to shave the deficit, he calls for $16.5 billion in spending cuts. Almost half of that -- $7.3 billion -- comes from three items: cutting K-12 school f

Another Example of Socialism Running Amuck

Here in New York, the teachers' union continues to exert its influence on the political elitists who accept campaign bribes to stay in office.

700 teachers are paid their full salaries while they wait for administrative hearings on the merits of their dismissal from the schools. This union concession is costing New York taxpayers $65 million fiat dollars per year (see the following article
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/22/new-york-teachers-p... )

Ain't socialism grand!!

granger... i know what you

granger... i know what you are saying. when i was younger we use to go to hollywood in hopes of running into movie stars, now i would like to run into them just so i could tell them off. i do think they are finally losing some clout though. several people i know no longer go to the movies because they don't want to support the celebrities. local news has become a joke due to their constant need to jam "celebrities" down our throats and people are getting sick of it. too much of what they consider a good thing and losing credibility because of lack of honest reporting of the nations issues has made the news pretty much irrelevent and people are beginning to realize this.

Since 1970, California has had growth caps.

All were circumvented thru bribery, lies and last minute "add ons".
The permaculturalist are the front line patriots of freedom. The small farmer has fed the world before 1950 with great pride.
The small farmer has my medical care for me . . . that is . . .
access to fresh, wholesome locally grown unadulterated organic foods.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

I want less government in CA

I'm waiting for the day so many state workers who produce absolutely nothing on the taxpayer dime are layed off.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but this state is completely out of control.

It's just absolutely asinine the way things are run here. The school system isn't the half of it.

The local county departments (tax collectors, building departments) have actually raised their fees in this downturn as a means of grabbing whatever scraps they have left. You can't build a damned thing here without a permit, and getting a permit for anything is pulling teeth, even after you pay the money and start the application process. Want to put up your solar panels on your remote parcel - $500 please.

I've been fighting with the county for nearly two years on my 50 acre parcel of land for septic approval. I now have to spend another $2k on a hydrogeologist even though i've met their requirements, but it's close. There is no law. All in all the county and department of water are nothing more than a dictatorship to push expensive systems and consultants to justify their existance. I have a good used manufactured home and permits alone are more than the cost of the home including moving and installation.

Plus, they want fire sprinklers in the home ($3k), hardie-board siding to replace the fiber-board siding, new doors, new tempered glass windows all for the sake of fire code improvement. If you don't have a fire-hydrant within 500', you have to go through all of this B.S.

I've seriously thought about moving somewhere else but I have a job.

Regulation is absolutely over-burdensome here in CA. It's a hellhole.

Santa Cruz is Ground Zero for UN Agenda 21

Once you get to understand UN Agenda 21, you see where since 1992, CA has been going against the will of the people and for the UN Agenda 21. Freedom 21 was organized to combat it, but this has been rendered to a marginalized irrelevant organization because CA IS Hollywood under Arnold Kennedy nee Schwartzenegger, who is all for UN Agenda 21 like Feinstein, Boxer, Pelousi and many Democrats and GOP in CA, and why Ron Paul spent very little time in CA... CA has 156 electoral votes and Democrats heavily campaigned here... it's always a give away who is going to win.. Win CA and you win. Arnold is going to win because C4L and RP have a hands off or a "activist" but there is no vetting candidates here.. so what do we do? I think all of us feel very alone here because we're up against Hollywood from the inside (Arnold and out, Democrats (HOLLYWOOD R US in CA).

I live in CA too

and I agree with you.

my daughter is the forth

my daughter is the forth generation in our family to live in orange county california. everyone in our family has always felt so lucky to have lived in such a great place. it is hard to believe how bad things have gotten due to big government. they still aren't doing any serious cutting. since the governor announced the budget deficit recently and stated the need for cuts there have been 1000 government jobs added. it is said, on average, 40 people have been hired a day (including weekends) for government jobs in the past 10 years. if there is a bailout for bad handling of the state nothing will be learned. these people are arrogant and thick. a perfect example is assembly woman noreen evans who recently stated... "living within our means, means nothing!" she feels the tax payers should just keep coughing up money. this is the mentality of many in our state's government.

Don't you DARE Bail us out

I'm counting on cuts in state government.

The state has already greatly annoyed all the city and county governments by "borrowing" "their" money. If things continue, I'm hopeful the mood will shift to demanding that services be provided locally and that the state let us keep more money to do it.

It would be great if everybody in Sacramento realized they have to cut. We don't need more prisons. The schools are a mess. Maybe the Governator will suddenly remember his Austrian Economics, before the state population drops any further along with the number of employers, all fleeing the state income and sales taxes.

The last thing we need is a bailout. (Although a federal tax cut would be nice.)

Maybe the future presinator does know Austrian Ec

Arnold is going to be presinator in 2012. That is why, C4L is Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo weak here...

Take over the GOP.. well, on one hand, suere I could do that, since it's nothing but a ladied lunch that rubber stanmps everything Arnold tells them to, but there's no help... I saw it during the RP campaigns. I'm very proud to say my banner stood high and clear, welcoming everyone to the coast for 5 months. I know ir stayed up because allot of people here LOVE RP... I'm told that all the time. But RP supporters are ignored in the Emerald Triangle and there has to be a reason... Medical marijuana is legal here.. you can grow 25 plants on your property, and Arnold won't legalize it? not for the money? Something is up... and I think it's Arnold will be president and the war on drugs made ibnto a civil war as he sells parks and natural resources to China, Taiwan, and Japan.

The sorry state? WTF?

This sorry state is the world's eigth largest economy, so what does that make your sorry state? This sorry state has 156 electoral votes, what does your sorry state have? This sorry state has a NEOCON GOP EMPORER as it's dictator and the GOP protects and serves him. This sorry state has stem cell research, a nuclear waste buster, WMD to make Iraq look like a sand box. This sorry state is so attractive to foreigners like China and Japan, you may find that this sorry state is SOLD before RP gets a chance to bail it out, after all, it's not a matter of IF there is a NWO, it's a matter of HOW, and not bailing out CA, WILL bring it on... Chana has the money and Arnold the GOP wants to SELL SELL SELL.
