Daily Paul "Reported Attack Site"

Thanks to everyone who's emailed & posted about the Google message they're receiving when they dial into the Daily Paul using the Firefox & Chrome browsers. I've seen it too. The message, on an ominous grey & red screen reads:

Reported Attack Site!

This web site at www.bullnotbull.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences.

Attack sites try to install programs that steal private information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system.

Attack sites try to install programs that steal private information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system.

Some attack sites intentionally distribute harmful software, but many are compromised without the knowledge or permission of their owners.

Here is what is going on: As some have pointed out, Bull Not Bull is another one of my websites, which has mostly languished since I started the DP. It is hosted at Dreamhost, which is a very cheap hosting provider - something on the order of $10/month for "unlimited" site hosting & bandwidth. Most of my other sites are hosted there, and that is in fact where the DP started out in January 2007.

"Unlimited bandwidth" is a bit of a misnomer, since the majority of websites simply don't get much traffic. However, a big site like the DP has become takes tremendous processing power to handle all the visitors and assemble all the pages from a database. In mid-2007, when the site outgrew its $10/monthly digs, I moved the DP to its own dedicated server. The server has a bandwidth limit, and I have to pay for any monthly overages. In order to minimize those overages, I host many of the images on the DP -- especially the large images -- on the cheap Bull! Not bull servers. Pulling the images from another site is not processor intensive, and it saves me money.

However, my Dreamhost account has been repeatedly hacked, and different kinds of spam has been posted to the sites hosted there. As a result, BNB has been banned from Google on numerous occasions, and I've had to clean the site & apply for reinstatement from Google. Apparently it has happened again - this is Google's elaboration on the matter.

At any rate, because many of the images on DP are linked from BNB, it was flagged as "potentially dangerous." I noticed this this morning around 11, and have spent the last 2 hours contacting Google, and finding and re-linking all of the images. It will likely take another couple of hours to finish, but I don't know when Google will unban the site.

Oh well, so there goes my Saturday afternoon. I had planned on spending the afternoon designing some new graphics & a site for Rand's upcoming moneybomb. I have been meaning to do this for a few weeks, but time has been particularly tight for me of late, as I've had to take on a few more jobs.

Thank you for your patience & understanding. The Daily Paul runs on extremely limited resources. I am the editor, webmaster, graphic designer, chief of technical support, head of customer service, security general, anti-spam engineer, etc. If you'd like to make a donation to the site to help offset the time I spend on working on it and holding it together, you can do so here: http://www.dailypaul.com/...

Please help me out by letting me know if you are / aren't getting the message, and what browser you're using

We also use Firefox.- sometimes ok, sometimes very slow 3PM

Generally we can log into DP ok, but during the session, loading becomes "bogged down" and the "Cannot locate site - check your address" window comes up. Right now it took quite a while for the home page to load and get to this screen. Sometimes the site seems to freeze totally, so I exit and wait a while and get back in later. This site http://www.visi.com/juan/... has not been loading at all for me during the last few days. Just now, it reported "connection interrupted".

Very curious, indeed Michael. Thanks for everything. A donation will be sent soon. In liberty.

Report restraint of trade to FTC

If you read the reasons that google claims for this asinine behavior you can see that beyond protecting the surfer it is also a system that serves to punish site owners who run ads from competing ad servers/vendors.

I strongly suggest you make an FTC complaint as google is taking a defacto police role here that benefits their ad revenue.

We don't need internet cops, even if it is oh-so-googley-warm-fuzzy big brother google.
