That's No Phone. That's My Tracker

by Peter Maass and Megha Rajagopalan | ProPublica
July 13, 2012,

7/20/2012: This story has been updated.

The device in your purse or jeans that you think is a cellphone -- guess again. It is a tracking device that happens to make calls. Let's stop calling them phones. They are trackers.

Most doubts about the principal function of these devices were erased when it was disclosed Monday that cellphone carriers responded 1.3 million times last year to law enforcement requests for call data. That wasn't even a complete count, because T-Mobile, one of the largest carriers, did not initially reveal its total. It appears that millions of cellphone users have been swept up in government surveillance of their calls and where they made them from. Many police agencies don't obtain a search warrant when requesting location data from carriers.

Thanks to the explosion of GPS technology and smartphone apps, these devices are also taking note of what we buy, where and when we buy it, how much money we have in the bank, whom we text and e-mail, what Web sites we visit, how and where we travel, what time we go to sleep and wake up -- and more. Much of that data is shared with companies that use it to offer us services they think we want.

We have all heard about the wonders of frictionless sharing, whereby social networks automatically let our friends know what we are reading or listening to, but what we hear less about is frictionless surveillance.

Veterans for Ron Paul March on the RNC !

Please help share the facebook event:

Fellow Americans,

If you care about this country, if you care about our Constitution, if you care about freedom, then you already understand the imperative of ensuring that Ron Paul is our next President, and that is the mission that we, Veterans for Liberty Super PAC, have taken on. Mission accomplishment requires that Ron Paul receives the majority of delegates at the Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay, Florida.

In the first round of voting, most delegates are bound by party rules to vote based on the results of their state primary. If there is not a clear winner of the first round of voting, the delegates become "unbound" and a second round of voting is held. The establishment will be hard at work, scrambling to build a coalition around another candidate. The delegates who are loyal to Ron Paul will not be swayed by false promises or handouts, but they will not yet be a majority. The fate of the nation will be in the hands of those several hundred delegate swing voters, who will have to choose between standing with the grassroots of the party, or the establishment that has demonstrated the attitude of Henry Kissinger, who famously said, "Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy."

Young Ron Paul Backers Stick With Their Candidate

As a 23-year-old member of the millennial generation, it’s fitting that Jacinda Kidd’s induction into politics came from YouTube.

It was there she happened upon a video of Ron Paul last January and that moved her beyond casual conversations with friends to dive headfirst into political activism.

“I was completely moved by it,” she said. “He’s never compromised, never went back on his word. I was immediately attracted to that. In this day and age it’s hard to find somebody who’s that sincere.”

"Romney has to take a very Machiavellian approach," he explained. "He wants to keep his friends - his supporters - close,

and his potential enemies - Paul supporters - even closer."

He won't get closer than a mile to me!

"Gov. Romney has a lot of respect for Dr. Paul and the energy his supporters bring to the process," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. "We look forward to broad participation at the Tampa convention and know the Paul enthusiasts will have their voices heard."

Giving Paul's fans some room could be a wise strategic move for Romney, O'Connell said.
