Free Market Capitalism in...China?

I was told in another thread that "people...have risen out of poverty in China through free market capitalism".

Here I thought China was a brutal communist regime that violently oppresses individual human liberty through things like forced abortions, involuntary servitude, a controlled media, and suppression of political free speech. In short, anything but a free market capitalist system.

What do you think?

UPDATE:

War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength.
Socialism is capitalism.

Obama DNI Nominee Won't Say if Waterboarding Is Torture

Intelligence Nominee Won't Say if Waterboarding Is Torture

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's nominee as director of national intelligence declined to say Thursday whether waterboarding is torture, marking a fissure with attorney general nominee Eric Holder, who said that it is.

"I'm hesitating to set a standard here which will put in jeopardy some of the dedicated intelligence officers who checked to see that what they were doing was legal and then did what they were told to do," said Dennis C. Blair, nominated for the intelligence post, at his Senate confirmation hearing. He did declare, however, that "there will be no waterboarding on my watch. There will be no torture on my watch."

Obama inauguration: A new tone. No more fake optimism for the people

The new president's speech was so sophisticated, you have to gasp

I know that Barack Obama is incredibly smart, and it's not that I'm surprised that he gave a fantastic speech. But I've been following American politics for a long time, and sometimes you see something that works on so many levels that you kind of have to gasp at its sophistication.

Every once in a while, a culture shifts. You feel like a Luddite until your new learning curve is complete. That is the experience I have been having recently, as my book The End of America has been turned into a documentary. Can political documentaries make a difference? For someone who lives mostly in the dimension of words, it is an exciting and scary question.

The End of America details the 10 steps that would-be dictators always take in seeking to close an open society; it argued that the Bush administration had been advancing each one. I took the message on the road, and one of those early lectures - at the University of Washington in Seattle, in October 2007 - was videoed by a member of the audience. Even with its bad lighting and funky amateur vibe, this video, posted on YouTube, has been accessed almost 1,250,000 times.

How Credible is the Narrative Put Forth by the Government and the 'Mainstream' Media?

Mind you that while I acknowledge that the government and the 'mainstream' media often report many verifiable facts, the veracity of which can be (and should be) independently corroborated by such faculties as alternative internet media, it is the overall narrative put forth that is often almost pure "spin" (aka "lying"). For example, take the recent "bailout" of Wall Street welfare queens. We were told by most of the grandiose mentioners in the 'mainstream' media and the government that we just had to "do something" otherwise the imminent collapse of the entire economy would ensue.

"Jewish state" Bans Arab Parties from Elections

By a margin of 26-3, the Israeli Central Elections Committee decided to ban the Balad Party from running in next month’s election. By a margin of 21-8, they also banned the United Arab List-Ta’al (UAL-T). The two bans will prevent more than half of the current Arab members of Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset, from running for reelection.

Gravity: Horizontal or Vertical Force?

Since 11 September 2001, reality has been turned on its head.

One of the ways that it was turned on its head struck me yesterday here, when a commenter tried to argue that gravity could cause the evisceration of the human body into centimeter-sized bone fragments and eject them laterally.

So, now I just want to know what you believe. Does gravity cause vertical, downward acceleration, or does it cause horizontal, lateral, sideways acceleration?

Thank you.

Official Government Conspiracy Theorist Guide

Just a brief primer for those wishing to defend the government's official 9/11 conspiracy theory that holds that 19 Arab Muslims with boxcutters "collapsed" three (3) steel-framed high rises with two (2) aircraft and penetrated the defenses of the U.S. Military Command Center (Pentagon) with another alleged aircraft.

Rationalizing Gaza by Justin Raimondo

Rationalizing Gaza
How they do it

by Justin Raimondo

We all know the rationalization for Israel's brutal invasion of the Gaza Strip. After all, it's been reiterated endlessly over the airwaves by official and unofficial spokesmen for the Israeli government, on all channels, and with no rebuttal or skeptical perspective from Palestinians or, indeed, from anyone vaguely sympathetic to their plight. Their argument goes like this: if rockets were coming from Mexican territory and landing in San Diego, posing a threat to the life and safety of American citizens, we all know what would happen.

This is supposed to settle the question of the morality of the invasion, but it doesn't. Because what we are seeing in this argument is a variation on the old cherry-picking technique of the neocons in the Bush administration, who utilized "talking points" that were very selective in their presentation of the facts to make the case for invading Iraq.

As the United States prepares to celebrate the inauguration of its first African-American president, it showcases again one of the best aspects of its national identity. Gonzales Says He’s Casualty of 'War on Terror'

Still jobless Gonzales says he’s ‘casualty’ of the war on terror

The onetime Bush Attorney General admitted Tuesday that “skittish” law firms won’t hire him after his departure under fire from the Justice Department surrounding his role in the political firings of nine US Attorneys. He says he considers himself a victim of the “war on terror,” though his firing actually came after what seemed to be a war on US Attorneys who didn’t cleave to Administration policies.
