  • "Teapot Dome" scandal! Bribe the campaign. Roll 'em & Poll 'em.

And throw 'em in the oven! A 1924 cartoon shows Washington officials fleeing in panic down an oil-slicked road to the White House, trying desperately to outpace the giant steamroller symbolizing the Teapot Dome scandal of President Warren G. Harding's administration.

During Warren Harding's presidency, 1922, Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall accepted a bribe of over $404,000 from Mammoth Oil and Pan America Petroleum to to get the leasing rights to the oil reserves at Teapot Dome in Wyoming [The US Navy Oil Reserve]. Unfortunately for Fall, the press caught wind and he was exposed. Prior to Watergate this was considered “greatest and most sensational scandal in the history of American politics”.

1922, Secretary of the Interior, Robert Fall leased drilling rights to the Teapot Dome Oil Reserves to Harry Sinclair’s Mammoth Oil Company, and the Elk Hills Reserve to Ed Doheney of the Pan American Petroleum Company. These agreements were no-bid contracts, and were incredibly generous to the oil companies, but an investigation indicated that the Generosity went both ways…as Fall Had received hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks from the oil companies for the back-door deal. It all might have gone unnoticed, but Fall made some extravagant improvements to his lifestyle that he couldn’t possibly afford, even as a cabinet secretary…and an investigation unveiled some no-interest loans made to Fall…and it all came apart in one of the biggest government scandals in history…the biggest up to Watergate. So Big Oil involvement in Dirty Politics is by no means a new phenomenon…nor is it a new phenomenon to see highly placed government officials with their hands out to Big Oil. Teapot Dome was just the prototype of what was to come…and is still coming.

Footnote: Mr Fall took the fall. The bribe payers skated. Big Oil got bigger & bolder.

Footnote: The bribe receiver was prosecuted & served jail time. The bribers avoided convection for bribery; yet, one served brief jail time for having juror tracked around town. How is it the ones perpetrating the bribery skate?

    Teapot Dome Scandal

Teapot Dome Scandal, also called Oil Reserves Scandal or Elk Hills Scandal, in American history, scandal of the early 1920s surrounding the secret leasing of federal oil reserves by the secretary of the interior, Albert Bacon Fall. After President Warren G. Harding transferred supervision of the naval oil reserve lands from the navy to the Department of the Interior in 1921, Mr Fall secretly granted to Harry F. Sinclair of the Mammoth Oil Company exclusive rights to the Teapot Dome (Wyoming) reserves (April 7, 1922). He granted similar rights to Edward L. Doheny of Pan American Petroleum Company for the Elk Hills and Buena Vista Hills reserves in California (1921–22). In return for the leases, Fall received large cash gifts and no-interest “loans.”

When the affair became known, Congress directed President Harding to cancel the leases; the Supreme Court declared the leases fraudulent and ruled illegal Harding’s transfer of authority to Fall. Although the president himself was not implicated in the transactions that had followed the transfer, the revelations of his associates’ misconduct took a severe toll on his health; disillusioned and exhausted, he died before the full extent of the wrongdoing had been determined. Mr Fall was convicted of accepting a bribe in the Elk Hills negotiations and imprisoned. Doheny and Sinclair were acquitted of charges of bribery and criminal conspiracy, but Sinclair spent 6 1/2 months in prison for contempt of court and contempt of the U.S. Senate. Although the secretary of the navy, Edwin Denby, had signed all the leases, he was cleared of all charges. While “Teapot Dome” entered the American political vocabulary as a synonym for governmental corruption, the scandal had little long-term effect on the Republican Party. Calvin Coolidge, a Republican, was elected president in 1924.

  • Glen Canyon Dam: Scourge of the Colorado River, 2008

    The Damn Glen Canyon Dam!

There was a time when dams made a lot of sense. From the 1930′s through the 50′s the U.S. federal government commissioned hundreds of dams throughout the rivers of this hard land. Dams provided a clean, renewable form of power. They retained water for use in agricultural irrigation. It seemed like a win-win.

As with many good ideas, this one was beaten to death. What began as a way to provide power and water to the people while providing jobs for then-unemployed workers petered out in the 1960′s a midst controversy. Dams do have negative environmental impacts. In the Colombia River gorge, salmon could no longer swim upstream to reach their spawning grounds. The US Corps of Engineers had to build salmon runs so the fish could get back to where they once belonged. In the Colorado River, so many dams were built that the river no longer reaches the Sea of Cortez. Sorry, Mexico! No clean water for you!
The Glen Canyon dam was originally meant to be two dams constructed in Dinosaur National Monument. Pressure from environmental groups caused the government to rethink its plan, and a compromise was made. There would be one dam in northern Arizona. Before the dam, the Colorado River ran through Glen Canyon, carrying nutrient-rich silt downstream. It was a remote area, a series of crevices cut into the barren desert floor....

  • Putin may play his role as Grand Duke leading us to the Czar...

Follow along with me a I present my published notes, The Innocents Abroad. Chapter 37 When they swagger around the stage in jeweled crowns and splendid robes, I shall feel bound to observe that all the Emperors that ever I was personally acquainted with wore the commonest sort of clothes, and did not swagger.
    37. CHAPTER XXXVII. (continued) Travelling with the Cossacks, whom lead our procession across Russia to met the Czar.
The Grand Duke and his Duchess came out, and the presentation ceremonies were as simple as they had been at the Emperor's. In a few minutes, conversation was under way, as before. The Empress appeared in the verandah, and the little Grand Duchess came out into the crowd. They had beaten us there. In a few minutes, the Emperor came himself on horseback. It was very pleasant. You can appreciate it if you have ever visited royalty and felt occasionally that possibly you might be wearing out your welcome--though as a general thing, I believe, royalty is not scrupulous about discharging you when it is done with you.
    http://www.literaturepage.com/read.php?titleid=twain-innocen...

The Grand Duke is the third brother of the Emperor, is about thirty-seven years old, perhaps, and is the princeliest figure in Russia. He is even taller than the Czar, as straight as an Indian, and bears himself like one of those gorgeous knights we read about in romances of the Crusades. He looks like a great-hearted fellow who would pitch an enemy into the river in a moment, and then jump in and risk his life fishing him out again. The stories they tell of him show him to be of a brave and generous nature. He must have been desirous of proving that Americans were welcome guests in the imperial palaces of Russia, because he rode all the way to Yalta and escorted our procession to the Emperor¹s himself, and kept his aids scurrying about, clearing the road and offering assistance wherever it could be needed. We were rather familiar with him then, because we did not know who he was. We recognized him now, and appreciated the friendly spirit that prompted him to do us a favor that any other Grand Duke in the world would have doubtless declined to do. He had plenty of servitors whom he could have sent, but he chose to attend to the matter himself.

The Grand Duke was dressed in the handsome and showy uniform of a Cossack officer. The Grand Duchess had on a white alpaca robe, with the seams and gores trimmed with black barb lace, and a little gray hat with a feather of the same color. She is young, rather pretty modest and unpretending, and full of winning politeness.

  • Thank you... This may help with perspective... The Cossacks.

The Cossacks were among Russia's greatest military tribes centuries ago.

THE COSSACKS ARE A group of Russian military warriors who still exist today, but without the same military power they had in the past.

The word "Cossack" is derived from the Turkic term kazak that means "free man" or "adventurer". They consisted of semi-independent Tartar groups - a Turkic-speaking people who lived in west-central Russia - or peasants escaping serfdom in Poland and Russia. The Cossacks united in the 15th century as a self-governing warrior organization that was loyal only to the Russian Czar. They settled in six different areas: the Don, the Greben in Caucasia, the Yaik, near the Ural River, the Volga, the Dnieper and the Zaporozhian, west of the Dnieper. The Cossacks accepted anyone who was considered a worthy warrior, but the new members had to believe in Christ. It is believed that most were of Slavic descent.

Note to reader: Continue reading at the linked article published in History Magazine. History recounted from the 15th century... forward. Putin seems well aware of the Cossack history.

  • The Rights of the Colonists Adopted by the Town of Boston, 1772

The Rights of the Colonists Adopted by the Town of Boston, November 20, 1772

[Boston elected body publishes principles held by man. This document gives light to the original intent of the principles restated in our Declaration of Independence.]

1st. Natural Rights of the Colonists as Men.

Among the Natural Rights of the Colonists are these First a Right to Life; Secondly to Liberty; thirdly to Property; together with the Right to support and defend them in the best manner they can—Those are evident Branches of, rather than deductions from the Duty of Self Preservation, commonly called the first Law of Nature...

When Men enter into Society, it is by voluntary consent; and they have a right to demand and insist upon the performance of such conditions, And previous limitations as form an equitable original compact.—

Every natural Right not expressly given up or from the nature of a Social Compact necessarily ceded remains.

All positive and civil laws, should conform as far as possible, to the Law of natural reason and equity.

    ### Among those Rights are the following; which no men or body of men, consistently with their own rights as men and citizens or members of society, can for themselves give up, or take away from others... ####

First. "The first fundamental positive law of all Commonwealths or States, is the establishing the legislative power; as the first fundamental natural law also, which is to govern even the legislative power itself, is the preservation of the Society." (footnote: Locke on Government [sec. 134]. Salus Populi Suprema Lex esto— ["Let the safety of the people be the supreme law." Locke, sec. 158])

Secondly. The Legislative has no right to absolute arbitrary power over the lives and fortunes of the people: Nor can mortals assume a prerogative, not only too high for men, but for Angels; and therefore reserved for the exercise of the Deity alone.

"The Legislative cannot Justly assume to itself a power to rule by extempore arbitrary decrees; but it is bound to see that Justice is dispensed, and that the rights of the subjects be decided, by promulgated, standing and known laws, and authorized independent Judges;" that is independent as far as possible of Prince or People. "There shall be one rule of Justice for rich and poor; for the favorite in Court, and the Countryman at the Plough." (footnote: Locke [sec. 136, 142] —)

Thirdly. The supreme power cannot Justly take from any man, any part of his property without his consent, in person or by his Representative.
